The subject of the paper is reflections on the consequences of Brexit for the functioning of the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland. The author explains what this border means when the United Kingdom is no longer a member of the European Union, and thus the border may be a barrier to the free movement of people, goods, capital and services. At the same time, it is stressed that the exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union will have a significant impact on the change of the function of this border, which from then on is no longer an internal border of the Union.
The aim of the paper is therefore to analyse the consequences of this change, with a simultaneous indication of different models of the UK's functioning with relation to the European Union and their impact on the British-Irish relations, especially with regard to the various dimensions of the border as a barrier.
The article presents various scenarios of solutions that will determine their mutual relations as a result of negotiations between the European Union and Great Britain, especially with regard to access to the single European market, which in turn will be influenced by the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland in the scope of the free movement of people, goods, capital and services. The author used the system analysis method and the comparative method.
The author puts forward the thesis that if the negotiations cause a fairly strong loosening of relations between the UK and the European Union, to mitigate the consequences of such a situation for the Irish-British relations, it will be necessary to find and develop bilateral solutions that will facilitate border crossing. The Smart Border 2.0 concept can constitute such a solution.

Celem artykułu jest zatem analiza konsekwencji tej zmiany z równoczesnym wskazaniem różnych modeli funkcjonowania Wielkiej Brytanii względem Unii Europejskiej oraz ich wpływu na relacje brytyjsko – irlandzkie, szczególnie w odniesieniu do różnych wymiarów przejawiania się granicy, jako bariery. Autor zastosował metodę analizy systemowej i metodę porównawczą. The European Union is a space within which the freedom of movement of citizens is exercised and expressed through the freedom of travel, work, studying, or living in a chosen country of the Union. The exercise of this freedom occurred as a result of the abolition of controls at the internal borders of the Union. The European Union, thanks to the inclusion of the Schengen Agreement and the Executive Convention into the EU law, has created institutions and measures for the protection of external borders (European Border and Coast Guard Agency, European Patrols Network, Rapid Border Intervention Teams, European Border Surveillance System) in terms of ensuring security for Member States and their citizens. The current migration crisis is a major verification for the evaluation of the effectiveness of these institutions and in this respect indicates the importance of adequate protection of external borders for the security of the Union's states and their citizens. The aim of the article is to analyze the problem of the functioning of institutions and other measures ensuring protection of the European Union's external borders in terms of guaranteeing the security of its states in the context of contemporary challenges. Until the emergence of the migration crisis, there was a conviction that the European Union had created institutional and operational conditions for effective ensuring of security of its borders. ; Celem artykułu jest analiza problemu funkcjonowania instytucji zapewniających ochronę zewnętrznych granic Unii Europejskiej pod kątem zagwarantowania bezpieczeństwa jej państwom w kontekście współczesnych wyzwań. Do chwili, kiedy zaistniał kryzys migracyjny istniało bowiem przekonanie, że Unia Europejska stworzyła instytucjonalne warunki dla skutecznego zapewnienia bezpieczeństwa swoich granic. UE to przestrzeń, w obrębie której realizowana jest swoboda przemieszczania się obywateli, wyrażona poprzez swobodę podróżowania, podejmowania pracy, studiowania czy zamieszkiwania w wybranym kraju Unii. Realizacja tej swobody nastąpiła w wyniku zniesienia kontroli na wewnętrznych granicach UE. Jednak dla państw Unii Europejskiej ceną tej wolności jest zapewnienie bezpieczeństwa narodowego, co czyni szczególnym ochronę granic zewnętrznych. Unia Europejska, dzięki włączeniu Układu z Schengen i Konwencji Wykonawczej do prawa UE, stworzyła instytucje dla ochrony granic zewnętrznych (Europejska Agencja Straży Granicznej i Przybrzeżnej, Europejska Sieć Patroli, Zespoły Szybkiej Interwencji na Granicy, Europejski System Nadzoru Granicznego) pod kątem zapewnienia bezpieczeństwa państwom członkowskim oraz ich obywatelom. Obecny kryzys migracyjny stanowi poważną weryfikację dla oceny skuteczności działania tych instytucji i w tym względzie wskazuje, jak istotne znaczenie dla bezpieczeństwa państw Unii i ich obywateli, ma odpowiednia ochrona granic zewnętrznych.

The European Union is a space within which the freedom of movement of citizens, expressed through freedom to travel, work, study or live in a chosen EU country, is realized. The implementation of this freedom was a result of the abolition of controls at internal borders of the Union. However, for a Member of the EU, the price of this freedom is the necessity to ensure national security, which makes the protection of external borders a special task. The European Union, through the Schengen Agreement, created institutions for the protection of external borders in terms of ensuring the national security of Member States. The current migration crisis is a serious verification of the effectiveness of these institutions. ; Unia Europejska to przestrzeń w obrębie której realizowana jest swoboda przemieszczania się obywateli. Realizacja tej swobody nastąpiła w wyniku zniesienia kontroli na wewnętrznych granicach Unii. Jednak dla państwa unijnego ceną tej wolności jest zapewnienie bezpieczeństwa narodowego co czyni szczególnym ochronę granic zewnętrznych. Unia Europejska, głównie poprzez Układ z Schengen stworzyła instytucje dla ochrony granic zewnętrznych pod kątem zapewnienia bezpieczeństwa narodowego państw członkowskich i ich obywateli. Obecny kryzys migracyjny stanowi poważną weryfikację dla oceny skuteczności działania tych instytucji. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza problemu funkcjonowania zewnętrznych granic Unii Europejskiej pod kątem zapewnienia bezpieczeństwa jej państw i obywateli w kontekście wyzwań jakie stawia kryzys migracyjny. Do momentu bowiem zaistnienia bieżącego kryzysu istniało przekonanie, że Unia Europejska stworzyła instytucjonalne warunki dla skutecznego zapewnienia bezpieczeństwa swoich granic.
