Addresses the problem of an excessive reduction of reality to deterministic principles. Examines several solutions offered by natural science itself, before proposing what significance these solutions may have for the social sciences and for their participation in interdisciplinary research. Argues that a new approach to a changing interdisciplinary endeavour is a necessary precondition for an anthropology of the 1990s. (SJO)
