Examines semiotics to explain the politics of language by focusing on three aspects of communication. A discussion & examination of how language & speech establish a communication system that rules citizens, a demonstration of how citizen readers can play active roles in the construction of meanings, & an examination of how new speech practices can introduce new politics are presented. By drawing on US feminists who employ semiotics, the power of this approach for understanding the sexist practices that inhibit political life is revealed. Four political strategies, inspired by feminist semiotics, that promise to change political life in order to move us closer to gender justice are suggested. 28 References.
