Introduction
An introduction to an edited collection explores how the inhabitants of the UK can create a better citizenship culture where it is normal & pleasurable to participate actively in public affairs. Citizenship also implies participation in the intermediate & mediating institutions, which make up civil society. The contributors look to the future as they visualize citizen participation in the UK during the middle of the 21st century. The goal is for the public to have access to the opportunity & skills needed to achieve both a rich public & a rich private life. Citizen participation is the key to a politically stable environment. The contributors explore the relationship of citizenship to education, multiculturalism, the European community, cultural activities, the media, continuing education, working life, volunteerism, participation in local government, & reforms within the central government.
