This resource book for students introduces the main concepts of multilingualism and provides a wide range of definitions revealing the complex nature of the phenomenon. It also provides knowledge on historical developments, linguistic and cultural changes and emphasizes the historical relevance to the present situation in Europe. The documentation on the EU policy on multilingualism is critically evaluated while placing policy issues in the context of national and institutional perspectives. The resource book for students explores the economic value of languages and the impact of global English as well as the role of other "big" languages in Europe and the world. The case studies of different European countries/ cities provide deeper knowledge and develop understanding of political, educational, economic and socio-cultural aspects of multilingualism. These aspects are highlighted by examining cultural and socio-political factors that may influence or even determine minority/ migrant language loss, their development or maintenance. Finally, it provides an analysis of challenges for the educational sector and the schooling of multilingual children.

The scientific cluster 'Research in Multilingualism and Language Development in a Context of Globalisation' is an interdisciplinary group of linguists, psycholinguists, sociolinguists, and political scientists who share an interest in language and culture studies. Our research focuses on language and culture sciences from a diverse set of perspectives. These include: first language acquisition; typical and atypical language development; developmental psycholinguistics; language and culture studies; language politics. Using sophisticated (psycho-) linguistic and social sciences' methods such as longitudinal observation, experimental studies, corpus linguistics, etc., members of the Cluster seek to learn about the language acquisition, development and change in the multicultural and multilingual settings. Cross-cultural and cross-linguistic studies also should be noted. Our many national and international collaborations with higher educational institutions, schools, trade communities and organizations provide opportunities for our members and students to gain valuable research experience and to share it among researchers and practitioners.

How much morphological variation can children tolerate when identifying familiar words? This is an important question in the context of the acquisition of richly inflected languages where identical word forms occur far less frequently than in English. To address this question, we compared children's (N=96, mean age 4;1, range 2;11–5;1) and adults' (N=96, mean age 21 years) tolerance of word-onset modifications (e.g., for stug: wug and wastug) and pseudoaffixes (e.g., kostug and stugko) in a label-extension task. Word-form modifications were repeated within each experiment to establish productive inflectional patterns. In two experiments, children and adults exhibited similar strategies: they were more tolerant of prefixes (wastug) than substitutions of initial consonants (wug), and more tolerant of suffixes (stugko) than prefixes (kostug). The findings point to word-learning strategies as being flexible and adaptive to morphological patterns in languages.
