The paper discusses fundamental structural deficits of the debate on sustainability and strives towards a sociological research program, which responds to these deficits. Three main aspects within the sustainability-discourse are being identified and criticized: 1. the hegemony of ecological und economical foci opposite to the marginalized social dimension of sustainability; 2. a reductionistic understanding of socio-ecological transformation rocesses; 3. the lack of a holistic emancipatory perspective for the future that guides the social-ecological movement and offers guidelines to the development of society. The paper attempts to fructify Sociology and its main findings as a critical and reflective perspective on the research of sustainability. Therefore, the concepts of Human Ecology and Environmental Sociology as well as the Utopian Studies and the Studies of Protest and Social Movements are being revitalised. (editorial reviewed)

Current sustainability research often neglects how sustainability can be created by sustainability actors in concrete social practice. So far, departing from pressure of multiple tendencies of crises, sustainability research has primarily dealt with the ecological, economic, technical and political framing conditions as well as the desired results of sustainable development. On the basis of a model of socio-ecological socialization research, this contribution depicts the multidimensional and simultaneously reciprocal links of action between actors (and between discourses). We thus shed light on the processes of social construction of sustainable development and its relevance for practices of societal transformation.

The political concept of sustainable development is built on the idea of an integral solution of global ecological as well as social problems. The underlying vision of their possible solution not only brought about a window of opportunity for creating a sociology of sustainability, but also offered a clear normative orientation for this field of investigation. In the meantime, we are observing a routinization and pluralization of sustainability practices. Thus, a shared normative premise can no longer be presupposed. We pick up the idea of a "second wave" of sociological sustainability research, which was coined by K.-W. Brand, but without setting the normativity of the Brundtland's conception of sustainability as the premise. Doing so, we argue for reflexivity, already apparent in the "first wave", as an integration point in the "second wave". To investigate sustainability phenomena we present a heuristic. Applied as a research program, this can be the core of a "second wave" of the sociology of sustainability as suggested by Brand. (editorial reviewed)
