Scholars often seek to understand the relationships between various social, economic, political, and cultural events and their impact on the lives of Canadians. As a compulsory social institution the school is an arena where the turbulent external environment has a significant influence. The teacher is the primary contact for children in the school and must deal with the indirect ramifications of societal activity as imported by the students. At the same time the teacher is a member of the wider community and is directly affected by those same events. The effects of such disruptions on the professional lives of teachers who live and work in Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, are documented and described in this article. ; Les chercheurs tentent souvent à comprendre les liens entre divers événements sociaux, économiques, politiques et culturels et l'impact qu'ils ont sur la vie des Canadiens. En tant qu'institution sociale obligatoire, l'école constitue un milieu que l'environnement externe turbulent influence de façon importante. L'enseignant est la personne-ressource principale pour les élèves à l'école, celle qui doit gérer les conséquences indirectes de l'activité sociétale telle qu'elle est importée par les élèves. De plus, l'enseignant fait partie de la communauté étendue et est donc directement affectée par ces mêmes événements. Cet article documente et décrit les effets de telles perturbations sur la vie professionnelle d'enseignants qui vivent et travaillent sur l'Ile du Cap Breton, en Nouvelle Ecosse.

This paper contains a consideration of some of the implications of the emerging information economy for quantitative geography. The vast increase in computer data bases creates exciting new prospects for applied analysis relevant to public policy and private organisations. An attempt is made to identify where these new opportunities are located, to discuss some of the reasons for previous failures, to exploit the intrinsic value of geographical analysis techniques, and to outline a research agenda for the future.

In this article, we report a case study of educational issues in northern Alberta. Using interviews and observations, we provide the different perspectives held by educators, students, parents, and community members about the goals and purposes of schools, the curriculum, and the language of instruction. Practices in the schools tended to maintain the status quo: a southern approach to education, with an emphasis on a provincial curriculum and English as the language of instruction. These schools did not reflect the realities of northern communities, such as a concern for Aboriginal languages, in spite of policies that provided for local control. À l'aide d'entrevues et d'observations, nous avons exploré différents points de vue exprimés par des enseignants, des élèves, des parents et des membres la communauté au sujet des buts de l'école, des programmes et de la langue d'enseignement. Les pratiques décrites au sein des diverses écoles participant à cette recherche avaient tendance à maintenir le statu quo : une approche de l'enseignement provenant du Sud avec une place de choix accordée au programme provincial et à l'anglais comme langue d'enseignement. Ces écoles ne reflétaient pas les réalités des communautés du Nord, tel le souci des langues autochtones, en dépit des politiques qui prévoient un contrôle local. The authors explore the bases for regional engagement by universities in the light of structural change within higher education and ongoing debates about the nature of regional economic development. They focus on the implications for a university's relationship with its region of the New Labour policy environment within England as set out in a series of White Papers and consultation papers concerned with industrial competitiveness, lifelong learning and Regional Development Agencies (RDAs), and assess how far these new policy proposals address Old Labour issues of uneven development within the knowledge economy. The authors conclude the paper by setting out new procedures on the part of government departments, RDAs, and universities themselves for linking universities and regions in order to create regional learning systems.

ABSTRACTThis paper develops a theoretical model of price and rent determination in the commercial property market. Prices and rents are assumed to adjust to ensure market clearing. A series of theoretical relationships are derived between prices and rents and a number of exogenous variables. These are then subjected to empirical testing for three types of property: industrial property, shops and offices. The results indicate employment is an important influence on price, especially for industrial property. In most cases, price and rent are also found to be sensitive to interest rates and residential property values.
