Congress: The Electoral Connection by David Mayhew (New Haven, CT: Yale U Press, 1974) has stimulated much research in the 25 years since it was first published. The author's focus on advertising & credit claiming has proved to be especially beneficial, but his arguments about position taking have had a less desirable impact because they have led some scholars to overlook the importance of studying policy representation.
