; In addition to presenting a short political biography of Stjepan Radić and his political activities during the Great War (1914 — 1918), the author of this article focuses on one particular historical source: a paragraph from the memoirs of a member of Czech "Maffia" Rudolf Giunio, a Croat from Dubrovnik, in which he wrote about a "political turnabout" of Stjepan Radić in Spring 1918 – from legitimising the Habsburg system to a supporter of unification of South Slavs. This paper examines the existing interpretation of this source by Croatian and Yugoslav historiography so far. The author argues that Croatian historian Bogdan Krizman had often used Giunio's memoirs since 1950s by retelling or summarizing its contents, sometimes without fully acknowledging it as historical source. For this reason, the author publishes this paragraph of Giunio's memoirs in full at the end of this paper. The original manuscript of Giunio's memoirs are kept in National and University Library in Zagreb.
; This article explores the biography of an Illyrian and nobleman Nikola Zdenčaj (1775–1854), emphasizing his political and cultural activities. Nikola Zdenčaj was rarely at the centre of scientific and/or professional research, so this article will explore and confirm his political path within the Illyrian movement (Croatian National Revival), while also clarifying some ambiguities and insufficiently established facts. Therefore, this article aims to shed light on the role of Nikola Zdenčaj during the Croatian National Revival, as well as on the Illyrian's position in today's historiography.
Ipak na marginama političkog života možemo pratiti začetke ekstremnih ideologija poput ustaškog pokreta, ustrojavanje četničkog udruženja i polako uzdizanje komunističkog pokreta i njegove ideologije. ; This paper presents the development of political parties and describes the political atmosphere in Grubišno Polje between the two world wars. By the downfall of Austro-Hungary and the formation of the new Yugoslav state in 1918, some of the existing political parties continued to operate in the newly established circumstances. However, new political parties were formed too. In Grubišno Polje, a pronouncedly multi-ethnic town, in which the majority were the Croats and the Serbs, and the minority the Hungarians and the Czechs, articulating one's political interests and orientations was extremely complex. Among Croatian population, Croatian People's Peasant Party established by the Radić brothers very soon became the principal party thanks to its peasant-oriented and republican political component and ideology, which it held on until the downfall of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Serbian population was however not as united in its political choice. At first, the Serbs were on the side of Pribićević's Democratic Party (later Independent Democratic Party). However, as the political situation in the country grew more complex (in particular due to not solving Croatian issue, but also due to growing material and social problems), their political preferences were directed towards regime parties with unitarianist programme – Yugoslav National Party and Stojadinović's Yugoslav Radical Union. Each of these political organizations formed its social and sports organizations, in which the ideology played an important role, being an immanent part thereof. The two national communities – Croatian and Serbian – were well integrated in the social community, and political life proceeded with no major antagonism or conflicts. Nevertheless, the beginnings of extremist ideologies may be followed on the margins of political life – for instance the Ustasha movement, the establishment of the Chetnik association, as well as gradual rising of the communist movement and its ideology. These groups, until that time marginal, had taken over the political scene when World War Two burst out in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. In this research, original archival materials from Croatian State Archives in Zagreb and State Archives in Bjelovar, secondary literature, as well as national and regional press were used.
Rad opisuje odnos grkokatoličkog biskupa Ilije Hranilovića i biskupa Josipa J. Strossmayera pri čemu se jasno nazire da je biskup Hranilović u svom kratkom biskupovanju (1882.-1889.), isprva bojažljivo, a zatim sve hrabrije počeo podržavati političku, te vjersku misiju i misao biskupa Strossmayera - o jedinstvu crkava i jačanju pozicija hrvatskog i ostalih slavenskih naroda unutar Austro-Ugarske Monarhije, kojom su tada vladale bečke i budimpeštanske elite. ; The paper sheds light on the relationship between Bishop Josip J. Strossmayer and the Greek Catholic Bishop Ilija Hranilović. Hranilović's support for the political and religious mission and thought of Bishop Strossmayer – who was concerned about the unity of the Catholic Church and the strengthening of the position of the Croatian people, as well as other peoples, in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy which was at the time governed by the Vienna and Budapest elites – was timid at first, but later grew so strong that he soon became one of "Strossmayer's men". In addition, the transcripts of six letters that Strossmayer sent to Bishop Hranilović, which are part of the Strossmayer legacy stored in the Archive of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and one that he sent to Bishop Hranilović's relative General Petar Hranilović, in which he expressed his condolences on the premature death of the Bishop, are given in the paper.
