Using semistructured interviews with thematic content analysis, an investigation of 36 young refugees in 1996, that had returned to Malawi (the country of their parents' birth), although none of them had previously been there. Reported were returnees' attitudes toward resources, activities, employment, & social contacts in Malawi; how the returnees viewed their national identity, their opinions of Malawi & Zambia (where they sought refuge) & of Malawians & Zambians; & their feeling about the future. Their experiences include being disappointed by Malawi, yet cherishing its significance as a homeland; confusion about national & cultural identity; feelings of isolation in Malawi; & the desire to return to Zambia. The results indicate that adjustment to a refugee's homeland may be difficult, especially for young refugees who may only have idealized impressions, but no experience, of home. 7 Tables, 39 References.
