Particulate composites of ferrite and ferroelectric polymer phases with general formula [xCoFe2O4]/[(1-x) PVDF] were prepared for x = 0, 3, 11 and 20 wt.% by solution casting. The dielectric constant, dielectric loss and saturation magnetization of the polymer composite films increase with increasing CoFe2O4 (CFO) content, being 13, 0.13 and 13 emu.g-1 respectively, for x=20. The magnetodielectric (MD) coupling also depend on the CFO content, the change in the dielectric response (MDE(%)) being the highest for the x=20 sample (4.2%). On the other hand, the highest value of the MD coefficient (γ) is higher on the x=3 sample (0.015 emu-2g2). Those values are favourably compared with the ones found in the ceramic-based MD materials, being the highest reported for polymer composites. "Available online 11 May 2016" ; Biodegradable poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and PLLA/CoFe2O4 magnetic microspheres with average sizes ranging between 0.16 -3.9 m and 0.8-2.2 m, respectively, were obtained by an oil-in-water emulsion method using poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solution as the emulsifier agent. The separation of the microspheres in different size ranges was then performed by centrifugation and the colloidal stability assessed at different pH values. Neat PLLA spheres are more stable in alkaline environments when compared to magnetic microspheres, both types being stable for pHs higher than 4, resulting in a colloidal suspension. On the other hand, in acidic environments the microspheres tend to form aggregates. The neat PLLA microspheres show a degree of crystallinity of 40% whereas the composite ones are nearly amorphous (17%). Magnetoelectric nanocomposite films composed of magnetostrictive CoFe2O4 nanoparticles with sizes between 35 and 55 nm embedded in P(VDF-TrFE) have been successfully prepared by a solvent casting method. The ferroelectric, piezoelectric, magnetic and magnetoelectric properties of the nanocomposite and their variation with the wt% of the ferrite filler, thickness of the composite and direction of the applied magnetic field have been investigated. Ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties are improved when small amount of ferrite nanoparticles were added to the polymeric matrix. Magnetic properties vary linearity with ferrite content. The highest magnetoelectric response of 41.3 mV/cmOe was found in the composite with 72wt% when a 2.5 kOe DC field was transversely applied to the sample surface. This value is among the highest reported in two phase particulate polymer nanocomposites. Thickness of the composite has no influence in the magnetoelectric response, allowing tailoring sensor thickness for specific applications. A novel approach for tissue engineering applications based on the use of magnetoelectric materials is presented. This work proves that magnetoelectric Terfenol-D/poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) composites are able to provide mechanical and electrical stimuli to MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblast cells and that those stimuli can be remotely triggered by an applied magnetic field. Cell proliferation is enhanced up to 25% when cells are cultured under mechanical (up to 110 ppm) and electrical stimulation (up to 0.115 mV), showing that magnetoelectric cell stimulation is a novel and suitable approach for tissue engineering allowing magnetic, mechanical and electrical stimuli. ; This work is funded by FEDER funds through the "Programa Operacional Fatores de Competitividade—COMPETE" and by national funds arranged by FCT—Fundac¸ ão para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, project reference PEST-C/FIS/UI607/2014. The unpredictable Anthropocene poses the challenge of imagining a radically different, equitable and sustainable world. Looking 100 years ahead is not easy, and especially as millennials, it appears quite bleak. This paper is the outcome of a visioning exercise carried out in a 2-day workshop, attended by 33 young early career professionals under the auspices of IPBES. The process used Nature Futures Framework in an adapted visioning method from the Seeds of Good Anthropocene project. Four groups envisioned more desirable future worlds; where humanity has organised itself, the economy, politics and technology, to achieve improved nature-human well-being. The four visions had differing conceptualisations of this future. However, there were interesting commonalities in their leverage points for transformative change, including an emphasis on community, fundamentally different economic systems based on sharing and technological solutions to foster sustainability and human-nature connectedness. Debates included questioning the possibility of maintaining local biocultural diversity with increased connectivity globally and the prominence of technology for sustainability outcomes. These visions are the first step towards a wider galvanisation of youth visions for a brighter future, which is often missing in the arena where it can be taken seriously, to trigger more transformative pathways towards meeting global goals.
