The intellectual, political and cultural exchanges between blacks from Africa, Europe and the Americas are playing an ever increasing role in scholarly work. This attests a new interest in the history of black populations and black cultures in France. The interwar period is a key moment for the emergence of a black French subjectivation that should be understood in relation to similar phenomena in other countries, in the first place in the United States. These countries were mostly situated on the edge of the Atlantic, therefore defining the boundary of the Black Atlantic. It is useful to analyse the black political movements of the twenties in their political and social context. These movements had original characteristics: they were clearly transnational, and they didn't only relate to intellectuals and politicians who wanted to better the lot of colonised peoples, but also of black workers. These movements maintained a close but strained relationship with the Communist Party.
