Dottorato di ricerca in Scienze e tecnologie per la gestione forestale ed ambientale ; Il persistere di sensibili livelli di inquinamento e di fenomeni di eutrofizzazione nei corpi idrici, nonostante l'evoluzione tecnologica degli impianti di trattamento delle sorgenti puntiformi e la capillarità dei controlli, ha mostrato l'importanza dell'impatto ambientale delle fonti d'inquinamento di tipo diffuso, ed in particolare di quelle di origine agricola. L'entità e la diffusione del problema sono tali da aver attirato negli ultimi anni una crescente attenzione, a livello locale, nazionale ed europeo, da parte degli Enti preposti alla gestione del territorio e delle Istituzioni legislative, le quali hanno prodotto una notevole quantità di strumenti normativi e pianificatori (1991/696/CE; 2000/60/CE; L. 183/89; D.lgs. 152/99). Considerata la complessità del fenomeno ed il suo stretto legame con la gestione del territorio, una strategia di contrasto efficace non può prescindere da un approccio ed un esame del problema di tipo integrato, pertanto, uno studio a scala di bacino idrografico può essere certamente proficuo, quando non necessario. Il presente lavoro di tesi, svolto nell'ambito del progetto di ricerca europeo EuroHarp (EVK1-CT-2001-00096), è consistito nello studio e nell'applicazione di modelli matematici per l'analisi e la quantificazione a scala di bacino idrografico dei fenomeni di inquinamento da fonti diffuse e nell'analisi delle interazioni esistenti fra gestione del territorio e lo stato complessivo dei corpi idrici. Nel corso del nostro studio un'attenzione particolare è tata rivolta al comparto agro-forestale. Dopo aver esaminato e confrontato fra loro i principali modelli di simulazione descritti in letteratura numerose ragioni, connesse alle sue caratteristiche, ci hanno indotto all'adozione del modello SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) nato dalla collaborazione fra lo USDA-ARS e la A&M Texas University. Si è scelto di applicare il modello al bacino idrografico del fiume Enza (Emilia Romagna), poiché per la complessità delle caratteristiche (orografia, land cover, land management) del suo territorio e la completezza delle informazioni climatico–ambientali disponibili, si presentava particolarmente idoneo ai fini del nostro studio. Trattandosi di un modello di tipo gestionale, SWAT ci ha permesso non solo di stimare l'apporto ai corpi idrici dei nutrienti di origine agricola (azoto e fosforo), sulla base dell'attuale uso e gestione del territorio, ma anche di simulare scenari di management differenti e quindi di valutare gli effetti di diverse pratiche di gestione e di uso del suolo. SWAT inoltre ci ha consentito di eseguire anche una stima del bilancio idrologico, e delle sue componenti (sotterranee e superficiali), oltre ad una valutazione del carico dei sedimenti prodotti, permettendo pertanto un'analisi complessa, quantitativa e qualitativa, dello stato del bacino. Analisi che abbiamo potuto approfondire a più livelli, ovvero a livello di corso d'acqua, di intero bacino, di sottobacini ed, in fine, di HRU (Homogeneous Response Unit), cioè di singole unità "soil type – land use". La possibilità di interfacciare il modello con il GIS ArcView, oltre a semplificarne le modalità d'impiego ed ampliarne la versatilità, ci ha permesso di elaborare una serie di carte tematiche in cui sono facilmente riconoscibili, ad esempio, le aree che contribuiscono maggiormente all'apporto di nutrienti o alla produzione di sedimenti oppure nelle quali è più elevato il runoff o la percolazione e così via. ; High pollution levels and eutrophication persisting in the water bodies, despite the technological evolution of the WWTP and the capillarity of the point sources controls, it has shown the importance of the environmental impact of the diffuse pollution sources, especially from agricultural land. The huge diffusion of the problem has attracted in the last years an increasing attention, from local to EC level, of management authority and legislative institutions, that have produced several normative and planners tools. Considered the complexity of the event and his links with the land management, an effective contrast strategy cannot put aside from an integrated approach and examination of the problem, therefore, a study at basin scale can certainly be profitable, when not necessary. This research, developed within the European project EuroHarp (EVK1-CT-2001-00096), has consisted in the study and in the application of mathematical models on the analysis and quantification at basin scale of diffuse pollution dynamics, with specal attention to agricultural sources. Also it has been investigated the interactions between land management and water bodies status. After the test of the main simulation models described in literature numerous reasons, connected to the characteristics of the model, have leaded us to the use of SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool), produced by the USDA-ARS and the A&M Texas University. The model has been applied to the Enza river basin (Emilia Romagna), particularly fit to the goals of our study due to the complexity of the land management and the completeness of the available climatic and environmental data. River Enza, a tributary of the Po river, originates in the Apennines at the border of Tuscany and Emilia Romagna, between the Acuto mountain (1756 m a.s.l.) and the Alpe di Succiso (2016 m a.s.l.).The river flows for about 99 Km and drains a catchment area of 900 km2, that can coarsely be divided into three parts: a southern mountain area, a central hilly area and a northern plain area. The main tributaries of the Enza River are the Termina and Tassobbio torrents. Being a managerial model, SWAT has not only allowed us to assess of the nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) loads from agricultural land in the water bodies, on the base of the actual land use, but also to simulate different management scenerios and therefore to evaluate the effects of different management practices and land use. Besides SWAT has allowed us to assess the water balance and the sediments load, allowing therefore a complex, quantitative and qualitative analysis, of the state of the basin. Analysis that we have been able to multilevel deepen: reach; whole watershed; subbasins; HRUs (Homogeneous Response Unit), that are single "soil type - land use" units. The user during the simulation process can employs the ArcView GIS interface, it simplifies the model use and improve its versatility. Also using the interface the user can produce thematic maps, very helpful to highlight subbasins with high nutrient or sediment loads, high runoff, and so on.
