Social crises draw attention to the fragility and temporary nature of everyday life. This not only triggers irritations, uncertainties and fears among the actors but also brings to light the rules of social order that have hitherto quietly and dutifully performed their services behind their backs. In particular, the restrictions on physical co-presence during the Corona pandemic have sparked renewed interest in the relevance and currency of the interactional order observed and described by Erving Goffman. What happens to the rituals of the interaction order when social encounters are less and less restricted to physical co-presence? And what are the implications of these changes for the self in the age of digital presence? Drawing on George Herbert Mead and Charles Horton Cooley on the one hand and ethnographic fieldwork and participant observation on the other, a theoretical and methodological cornerstone of Goffmanian sociology is presented and discussed. It is argued that the indissoluble links between specific theoretical assumptions and a particular conception and practice of empirical research are crucial for the continuing relevance of Goffman's interaction order, not least for the study of social action in digital media.

Es setzt an mit einer Reflexion der historischen Dimensionierung des Wahrnehmungssinns, seiner Wandlungs- und Formungsgeschichte im gesellschaftlichen Zivilisationsprozess und fragt nach den aktuellen Normen und Standards im Umgang mit dem Olfaktorischen: Welchen Stellenwert und welche Relevanz hat die spezifische Qualität olfaktorischer Alltagserfahrungen für die Selbstwahrnehmung und Fremdeinschätzung von Individuen und für ritualisierte Interaktionsprozesse in der Moderne? Zentral für die Argumentation ist der Zusammenhang von olfaktorischer Wahrnehmung und sozialer Schichtung. Gestützt auf eine Sekundäranalyse quantitativer und qualitativer Daten vertritt Jürgen Raab die These, dass die Wahrnehmung und die Interpretation von Gerüchen, die Vermeidung von Gestank wie auch die Hervorbringung von Duft, sozial bedeutsame Alltagspraktiken sind. Sie dienen der Generierung, Signalisierung und Manifestation von sozialer Nähe und Distanz. Sie sind damit abhängig von den gesellschaftlichen Lebensstilen als Zugehörigkeit der Handelnden zu bestimmten sozialen Milieus. Ein Modus der Produktion und Reproduktion sozialer Ordnung.

'The article offers a brief resume of recent developments in the field of interpretative visual analysis with emphasis on the German speaking area and the sociological discipline. It lays a special focus on hermeneutical and genre analysis and on research with audiovisual data. Far from constituting an already closed field, the authors stress the fact that methodological advances in qualitative research based in visual data still face a number of pending quests. This encompasses sequentiality, complexity and naturalness of video-graphic data, and extends to the respective methodological challenges for transcription, analysis and presentation of results.' Der Beitrag gibt eine kurze Zusammenfassung der jüngeren Entwicklung im Bereich der visuellen interpretativen Analyse, mit besonderem Gewicht auf den deutschsprachigen Raum und auf die Soziologie. Sein Hauptfokus liegt auf der hermeneutischen und gattungsanalytischen Forschung mit audiovisuellen Daten. Angesichts eines alles andere als bereits klar umrissenen Feldes betonen die Autoren den Umstand, dass der methodologische Fortschritt in der Forschung mit audiovisuellen Daten sich mit einer Reihe von anhängigen Fragen konfrontiert sieht. Sie betreffen unter anderem die Sequenzialität, Komplexität und Natürlichkeit von Videodaten sowie methodische Herausforderungen für die Transkription, Analyse und Präsentation der Ergebnisse.
