; This paper analyzes the social participation of Spanish young people, based on the concept of social capital. We use Covariance Structural Models as methodology to find the relationship between the participation activities of young people and factors such as their associations membership, their interest on politics, their confidence feeling on the political participation and values such as solidarity. It also evaluates the influence of external variables such as gender, social class or studies. The main hypothesis is that the overall participation is mediated primarily by the interest in politics and by the activity in institutionalized areas of participation.
This paper shows the increasing trend of Spanish young people towards non-conventional mechanisms of political expression, in a crisis context which has reduced its reliance on traditional political actors. As an alternative to bipartisanship, political participation moves towards increased interest and attention to new players, such as emergent political parties. Using a covariance structural model, factors such as political activism, awareness and understanding of country problems, and trust in the political system, are explored in order to explain an electoral behavior that is undergoing deep changes.
Civic culture is structured on a network of interpersonal associations with different degrees of formalization. According to theories on civic and political action, certain agents, such as associations, play a key role in setting targets, socializing or coordinating sociopolitical actions, among other functions. Associations strengthen the political and civic system of societies. Likewise, they are a vehicle for individuals' integration, which is particularly important in the case of immigrants. For these, associations are both a vehicle for integration and an instrument for political participation. This article explores the use and purpose of associations according to immigrants from Romania, Poland, the United Kingdom and Germany living in Spain. ; This research has been funded by the projects CSO2012-32930 "The political participation as candidates of European migrants in Spain" ("LA PARTICIPACION POLITICA COMO CANDIDATOS DE LOS RESIDENTES EUROPEOS EN ESPAÑA"), by the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, and the project MOVEACT, JUST/2010/FRAC/AG/1186, European Commission. The analysis and the qualitative data come from both projects. The survey data comes from the European Project.
Non-conventional participation has dramatically spread because of cultural and social change, favouring a deinstitutionalisation of politics. To verify if there is a link between this spread of non-conventional participation and the mobility of Europeans living in other European countries, we have explored the data gathered by the MOVEACT European project, including data on the political behaviour of "old Europeans" (British and Germans), and "new" Europeans" (Poles and Romanians), resident in Greece, France, Italy and Spain. Our analysis has confirmed that a plurality of variables affect the relation between movers and non-conventional participation. There are three relevant dimensions to explain the unconventional political participation of EU movers: social integration, situational context and individual characteristics. On the other hand, the key aspect to understand the non-conventional participation of EU movers is the degree of Cognitive Political Mobilisation, together with other factors such as membership of associations, family socialisation, expectations of living in the country of residence in the future or the political culture in the country of origin. ; This research has been funded by the project MOVEACT - "All Citizens Now": Intra-EU Mobility and Political Participation of English, Germans, Poles and Romanians in Western and Southern European Cities (MOVEACT), a project funded by European Commission, Directorate-general of Justice, Freedom and Security.
; This paper focuses on improving the knowledge of the explanatory keys that establish the relation among the demand for political representation of the citizens, the ideological identification, and the ability of the political parties to respond these demands for representation. A conceptualization is proposed, to measure the degree of fit between these concepts. Three measurement strategies are applied: the topological operationalization, the operationalization through ideological labeling and the measurement of positioning toward political issues. The conclusion remarks the convenience of making use of mixed designs, capable of taking advantage of the potential of each of the measurement strategies.
; Again, the notion of "circular migration" as a process of rationalization of migrations with job motivation is reappearing. It is a concept that produces both favourable and adverse reactions among researchers. Like so many proposals, their strengths and weaknesses depend more on how is realized its regulation and its practical application than on their content and potential. A substantial part of migration corresponds to socio-economic reasons, associated with job mobility. For this type of migration, the break with the cultural elements of everyday life and the social networks from their home country are unintended consequences of mobility. The most visible contribution of their efforts in the countries of origin is the economic remittances. Circular migration suggests that mobility incorporates the notion of return. In other words, that migration involves a moment of their life cycle, where the return to their social environment of origin can become a reality, including benefits for a new migration later. The consequences of this restructuring on the horizon of life of the migrants are important. It allows reintegrate skilled human capital to the societies of origin, with positive consequences for social and economic development in these societies. It maintains the quality of emotional life for the migrants and their families. It intensifies the relationship between the societies and simplifies the problems of coexistence of contradictory religious or cultural systems, with particular reference to freedom and equality. There are numerous examples relating to gender violence, children, etc, that are unacceptable in the democratic Western societies. Certainly the optimal scope is defined by economic migration. This migratory approach excludes other types of migration especially important: the Non-economic migration, with other motivations as for example to look for new horizons of life, exploring alternative lifestyles, political persecution, and so on.
