Crop production is a crucial ecosystem service that requires a combination of natural and anthropogenic contributions to high and stable yields, which is a coproduction process. We analysed this coproduction based on nationally aggregated data for 15 major crops for 67 countries and the European Union with data for four time steps (2000, 2006, 2010, 2014). We found strong increases in fertilizer use, net capital stock and manure use intensity for lower-middle-income countries and stagnation or decrease of these for high-income countries. We used a multiple linear regression model predicting yield to distinguish the effect of anthropogenic contributions (crop-specific fertilizer use intensity, net capital stock intensity, manure use intensity) and natural contributions (crop-specific agricultural suitability, including soil characteristics, topography and climate). We found that in particular fertilizer use intensity, manure use intensity and agricultural suitability explained variation in yields to a considerable degree (R(2) = 0.62).

After the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989, demographic decline and urban shrinkage brought massive changes in the housing stock in East German cities. Urban planners and policy makers face complex problems caused by the resulting vacancies and demolitions and the handling of urban brownfields in the inner city. At the same time, cities are under ongoing pressure of suburbanisation. Because existing models focus mainly on demographic and urban growth and their impact on housing stocks, we present a simulation model that is able to compute both growth and shrinkage processes. We uncover nonlinear dynamics and feedbacks between demography, housing preference, and supply of housing space. The simulation results show that, despite population decline, the increasing number of single households leads to a growing total housing demand in the central parts of the study area. Beyond this area, residential vacancies in multistorey housing segments will remain regardless of population growth. At the same time, the simulations show that, despite population shrinkage and an overall oversupply of flats, there is a negative net demand for flats in affordable prefabricated housing estates as the percentage of low-income households increases. These findings will help planners modify or adapt their visions of the residential function in shrinking cities and to adjust current programmes of renewal and restructuring.

Urbane grüne Infrastruktur (UGI) ist von zentraler Bedeutung für resiliente Städte, da sie essentielle Ökosystemleistungen (ÖSL) bereitstellt. Neben ÖSL kann UGI auch negative Effekte (disservices) erzeugen. Die Nutzung von ÖSL und disservices hängt dabei von persönlichen Präferenzen der Nutzer*innen und dem UGI-Design ab. Diese Dissertation erfasst die tatsächliche Nutzung von ÖSL sowie die Wahrnehmung von disservices durch UGI-Nutzer*innen in Leipzig, Deutschland und wie diese durch spezifische UGI-Merkmale beeinflusst werden. Außerdem zeige ich Diskrepanzen zwischen den Vorstellungen der Bürger*innen bezüglich der zukünftigen UGI-Entwicklung und lokalen Planungsschwerpunkten. Basierend auf den zentralen Ergebnissen der Arbeit formuliere ich Gestaltungsprinzipien für die UGI-Planung: Mehr Vielfalt von UGI und Baumbestand, Integration von städtischer Wildnis, Verbesserung der grauen Infrastruktur und sozioökonomischer Aspekte und Beteiligung der Bürger*innen an Planung und Pflege.

Forschung in diesem Feld zeigt jedoch, dass die jeweiligen Zusammenhänge komplex und kontextspezifisch sind. Diese Dissertation integriert umfangreiche Fallstudiendaten und trägt somit zu einem generischen Verständnis und überregionalen Bild des Umwelt-Migrations-Nexus bei. Der Fokus liegt auf den Mechanismen, durch die Umweltwandel menschliche Mobilität beeinflusst, der relativen Bedeutung von Migration als Anpassungsstrategie, und den Kontexten, die Ressourcenkonflikte in Zielregionen fördern. Die Ergebnisse widerlegen deterministische und vereinfachte Annahmen und betonen die Schlüsselrolle von sozialen und politischen Faktoren auf multiplen Skalen.
