W artykule dokonano przeglądu polityki państw w stosunku do mniejszości narodowościowych i procesów nadawania im autonomii terytorialnej na przykładzie trzech krajów zróżnicowanych pod względem położenia geograficznego, odmiennych dziejów i zróżnicowanych struktur narodowych. Do analizy wybrano Mjanmę, Panamę i Boliwię.

The article analyses the transformations of political divisions of the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea – Cyprus (with an area of only 9285 km2). In almost all historical periods, the island's political unity was rare, and its territorial divisions are almost the norm. One can also observe the deepening process of territorial diversifi cation of Cyprus, which, paradoxically, has reached its apogee nowadays. Currently, it is possible to distinguish as many as 17 separate territorial fragments with different international status on the island. In Cyprus, there are currently two states and two colonial territories (Great Britain) and an internationalised area, as well as one territory with unknown status (Varoşa). No political unit in Cyprus has territorial continuity. One of these countries is a full member of the European Union and so the other territories are therefore in special relations with this organisation. The process of the political and territorial unification of the island, which has been going on for several decades, is suspended in practice and the hopes that are stirred up every few years that it will reach the final this time always turn out to be premature.
The flow of immigrants into Europe is a phenomenon commonly known since the endof the Second World War. To a large extent it was the result of a colonial and then post-colonialrelationship between metropolises and their overseas territories. Migration movements in Europeintensified after 1989 along with systemic changes in the eastern part of the continent. The phenomenon of increased migration to Europe observed since March 2015 combines bothprocesses: economic migration, which undoubtedly dominates in terms of number, and exiles, ofa much smaller scale, but given as the cause of migration by almost all migrants. A new phenomenonis the fact that a large part of migrants constitutes uncontrolled migration, which in previous yearswas marginal. In 2015, asylum applications were submitted in EU countries by as many as 1.25million people. The influx of refugees to Europe has become not only a demographic phenomenon, but also a political one, evoking strong political emotions. Mass migrations also seem to be an instrumentof international policy implementation by key world powers. The main purpose of the article was to present the background of the mass migration to Europe thattook place in 2015. The main reasons for the decision to emigrate by the citizens of origin countrieswere shown, as well as the routes by which refugees flow into Europe.

Border researches have a long tradition in Poland, because they precede the emergence of geography as an independent scientific discipline. The growing interest in the issue of borders appeared at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, when the revival of Polish statehood became the subject of political discourse in the occupied country as well as in exile. The main topics of border and boundary research within political geography focused primarily on state and administrative boundaries. On the field of Polish historical geography, more popular were studies on the history of territorial changes of the country, starting from tribal structures. The other aim of research were internal divisions of Poland into historical, political and administrative regions. One can observe the regularity that studies of political geography developed more strongly during periods of freedom of research (e.g. in the inter-war period), and in the periods of ideological restrictions (e.g. annexations by neighboring powers), historical-geographical studies were intensifying. The aim of the article is to review the researches on borders in Polish political and historical geography since they were taken up until the end of the Second World War showing the most important trends in their development.

The state is subject of interest to many scientific disciplines: constitutional and international law, sociology, philosophy, administrative and political sciences, social psychology, economics, political and economic history, military sciences, regional studies and, of course, political geography and geopolitics. In the course of history, from ancient to modern times, the state was defined in very different ways. The author comes out in his deliberations from the analysis of the elements that make up the various definitions of the state. Then he reviews the classification of functions that the modern state fulfills and analyzes the way in which they are implemented in various countries around the world, trying to answer the question, is the state necessary for citizens and for what? Finally, the author draws attention to the frequent undertaking of the subject matter of the functioning of the state in the world's belles-lettres in epic works and in dramas both in the past and nowadays. The last issue raised in the paper is the analysis of the functioning of unrecognized countries, mainly European ones, and what are the consequences of their exclusion from the international community influencing the life of their inhabitants, economy and functioning of their societies.

Polish accession to the Schengen Agreement and abolition of border control within EU countries on 21st December 2007, is a good occasion to summarize the role of boundaries in the period directly preceding the revolutionary changes that took place on EU internal borders of Poland. In the paper author analyses one out of four land borders encompassed by the Schengen Agreement, namely the western border with Germany. Remaining sections of land borders, where abolition of border control took place at the same time, are: south-western border (with the Czech Republic), southeastern border (with Slovakia) and north-eastern border (with Lithuania). Also, however to some extent only, the sea and airports border control was cancelled (only for cruises and flights to signatory countries of the Schengen Agreement).

Africa is placed second among all continents as to the number of refugees. The number of persons remaining under the mandate of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees – UNHCR in Africa has reached 6,072,900 (as for January 1, 2002) or 27.86% of all registered refugees on the world (UNHCR basic., 2002). Only in Asia there are more refugees: 38.77%. It should be noted, though, that only a part of refugees are comprised in the UNHCR registers. Two categories of refugees can be distinguished: international and internal ones. The former includes persons who have crossed at least one state border while emigrating; the latter includes internally displaced persons (IDPs).There is no clear-cut definition of the 'refugee camp'. This term is applied to settlements that vary as to their size and character. Generally speaking, the refugee camps are restricted areas, accessible only for refugees and people who assist them. The refugee camp are conceived as temporary shelters where refugees are taken into care until they can go back home or move to another place. Contrary to refugee villages or refugee settlements, the refugee camp are usually not self-sufficient. Three types of refugee camps can be distinguished with regard to their situation in relation to international borders: 1. Refugee camps situated in borderlands within the country of origin. They draw migrants fleeing local civil wars or political prosecutions who, however, do not find the situation dramatic enough to definitely leave their country. Refugees remain in an immediate proximity of the border, always ready to emigrate abroad. 2. Refugee camps situated also in borderlands but outside the territory of the sending country. Refugees remain in touch with their country, waiting for changes in politico-military situation that would make possible their return home. 3. Refugee camps located up-country, often near large cities (capitals in particular). For such camps are not related to border areas, in this paper they are left out of account.

Liczne strumyki refleksji poznawczej i badawczej przenoszone przez pokolenia geografów politycznych ujął on w indywidualny nurt naukowej eksploracji.
