Abstract: Does Women's Lower Labor Force Participation Explain their Higher Engagement in Private Care Work? A Contribution to the Debate about Gender Equality Women do still provide more private care work than men, although their participation in employment has increased in the last decades. Using longitudinal data of the German Ageing Survey 1996 to 2017, in this paper, we study, whether women's greater engagement in unpaid social support and care giving can be attributed to the fact that women compared to men are still less economically active and have a lower occupational qualification. This hypothesis, however, cannot be confirmed, as the gender differences in the private unpaid care work can be explained by gender differences in the labor force participation only to a small amount.
; The German Survey on Volunteering (FWS) is a representative survey of voluntary activities of persons aged 14 and older in Germany. Volunteering and the willingness to volunteer can be reported and described among population groups and across regions. Additionally, volunteers as well as former volunteers and other persons who do not volunteer can be studied. The FWS provides a substantial database for the description of volunteering in Germany and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ). Up to now data of the Survey on Volunteering (FWS) have been collected in 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014. Since December 2011 it has been scientifically managed and supervised by the German Centre of Gerontology (DZA). The interviews of the fourth wave were conducted by infas - Institute for Applied Social Sciences in 2014.
This paper examines patterns of financial transfers between adult children and their parents in migrant families from the former Soviet Union in Germany. Data from the survey on Ageing of Soviet Union Migrants (ASUM) 2011 allows to compare the exchange of financial transfers in migrant families with elderly parents living in Germany as opposed to migrant families with elderly parents living in the country of origin. Results indicate a substantial number of transnational child-parent relationships among ethnic German migrants from the former Soviet Union. As to the exchange of resources, while financial transfers typically flow from parents to adult children if migrant's parents live in Germany, this is not the case in transnational child-parent relationships, here financial transfers flow more often from adult children in Germany to the elderly parents abroad. We interpret these different patterns in the direction of giving and receiving financial transfers between adult children and parents in transnational or non-transnational relationships as differences in the welfare systems which guarantee different levels of provision for old age.
