Measuring change over time is one of the main purposes of longitudinal surveys. With an increase in the use of web as a mode of data collection it is important to assess whether the web mode differs from other modes with respect to the number of changes and events that are captured. We examine whether telephone and web data collection modes are compara­ble with respect to measuring changes over time or experiencing events. Using experimen­tal data from a two-wave pilot of the Swiss Household Panel, we investigate this question for several variables in the domain of work and family. We find differences for the work-related variables, with web respondents more likely to re­port changes. These differences do not disappear once the socio-demographic composition of the sample is taken into consideration. This suggests that these differences are not driven by observed different characteristics of the respondents who may have self-selected into one or the other mode. Contrary to work-related variables, a termination of a relationship was more common in the telephone group. This shows that one mode does not necessarily measure more change or events than another; it may depend on the variable in question. In addition, the difference in the protocol mattered: a web respondent in a household that participated fully by web sometimes differed from a web respondent in a household that had a household interview by phone. Nonetheless, the telephone group differed more from the various web protocols that the web protocols among themselves. With more household panel surveys introducing web questionnaires in combination with more traditional face-to-face and telephone interviews, this study adds to our understand­ing of the potential consequences of mixing modes with respect to longitudinal data analy­sis.

However, far less is known about the applicability of this theory when investigating radical right support. Using the Swiss Household panel data (1999-2007), this study empirically identifies the relationship between parents' preference for the Swiss radical right party SVP and their attitudes toward immigrants and the EU, and their offspring's preference for the SVP. Disaggregating fathers' and mothers' influence reveals that in particular, mothers' SVP support plays a role in SVP support among young people, even after controlling for educational similarities. We also demonstrate that girls are more likely to be influenced by their mothers than are boys. Furthermore, parents' negative attitudes toward the EU exert a positive influence on their children's radical right voting, independent of their voting pattern. [Copyright Elsevier Ltd.]

Using longitudinal data from the Swiss Household Panel to zoom in on continuity and change in the life course, this open access book describes how the lives of the Swiss population have changed in terms of health, family circumstances, work, political participation, and migration over the last sixteen years. What are the different trajectories in terms of mobility, health, wealth, and family constellations? What are the drivers behind all these changes over time and in the life course? And what are the implications for inequality in society and for social policy? The Swiss Household Panel is a unique ongoing longitudinal survey that has followed a large sample of Swiss households since 1999. This paper studies the impact of separation from marital and cohabiting relationships on political party preferences. Relying on longitudinal data (1999–2017) from the Swiss Household Panel, it examines to what extent differences in party preferences between partnered and separated individuals are the result of a selection effect (with individuals who separate having different party preferences prior to their separation compared with partnered individuals) or of a causal effect (with individuals changing their party preferences following separation). The analyses show that partnered individuals are significantly more likely to support a party with Christian values (the CVP) compared with separated individuals, and indicate that this is due to a selection effect. For populist right (SVP) voting, we find a causal effect of separation. Interestingly, the event of separation increases the likelihood of supporting the populist right SVP. While separated individuals are more likely to support the social democratic party (PSS) than married individuals, we do not find a significant selection or causal effect of separation on support for the PSS. Overall, our results confirm the relevance of taking a dynamic approach distinguishing selection and causal effects and reveal that the effect of separation on voters' party choice is modest but significant.

Les mères sans conjoint et avec des enfants à charge sont plus susceptibles d'être sans emploi et pauvres, deux facteurs qui augmentent les risques d'être en mauvaise santé. En Suisse, l'insuffisance des politiques de conciliation entre travail et famille et une fiscalité qui avantage les couples mariés adoptant une division traditionnelle du travail se traduisent par de faibles taux de participation des mères au marché du travail. Pour le cas particulier des mères seules vivant avec leurs enfants, l'emploi peut être associé à une meilleure santé parce qu'il atténue les difficultés économiques liées au fait d'être le seul pourvoyeur de ressources du foyer. Cependant, le travail peut représenter un facteur de stress supplémentaire étant donné que les mères assument désormais seules la majeure partie des soins aux enfants. Comment l'état de santé autodéclaré est-il associé à la situation familiale et le statut d'activité en Suisse ? Les analyses du Panel suisse de ménages (vagues 1999-2011) montrent que les mères seules qui sont hors du marché du travail présentent plus de risques de déclarer un mauvais état de santé, en particulier si elles disposent d'un diplôme du secondaire supérieur. En revanche, les mères seules se déclarent en meilleure santé si elles travaillent à temps plein plutôt qu'à temps partiel, alors que c'est l'inverse pour les mères en couple.

Not accepted by the family: 'being difficult' or 'being different'? .Using data from the Netherlands Kinship Panel Study (NKPS) and combining a quantitative and a qualitative approach (N = 7.151 and n = 43, respectively), this study investigates the mechanisms
underlying a lack of acceptance by one's family. From the total NKPS-sample 12,1 per cent did not feel (entirely) accepted by their family. Theoretical assumptions were that people may not feel accepted by their family because they are 'difficult', e.g. by exhibiting personal
problems; another reason might be that they are 'different', for instance because they have made non-traditional life course transitions or differ from their parents in educational level or religious preference. Both quantitative and qualitative results confirm the first assumption
rather than the second. Qualitative results revealed a gender difference in the mechanisms involved in a lack of acceptance by one's family.

Abstract
Using the Swiss Household Panel, we examine whether experiencing relationship dissolution, unemployment, or a health crisis increases support for the Swiss People's Party (SVP). Fixed effects models shows this to be the case. Changes in financial resources, attitudes or trust in the government cannot explain this effect. Finally, we test whether increased support for the SVP following these events is more likely among individuals with lower trust and income levels and with views similar of those of the SVP. We find that individuals with traditional gender values are more likely to support the SVP after separation.

In preparation of the next refreshment sample of the Swiss Household Panel (the SHP_IV, to start in 2020), the SHP ran a two-wave pilot study in 2018 and 2019 to test alternative modes of interviewing. Advances in information and communication technol-ogies and the increasing use thereof, suggest that web-based data collection offers a particularly promising alternative to telephone in the Swiss context. However, differences between CATI and web are large in terms of interviewer presence, interview pace, and the channels of communication used (oral or visual) (Couper 2011), meaning the compa-rability between the modes should be evaluated.
Also, the SHP is considering recruiting a refreshment sample in a different mode than the one used until now, which for large-scale household panel surveys has not yet been tested. It is often assumed that web mode would be inappropriate for panel recruitment purposes (Tourangeau 2017) because of its typically lower response rates, but it is un-clear whether this argument still holds in the context of a panel recruited by telephone.
To test the ways in which offering web as an alternative mode affects response rates, sample composition and measurement, the SHP mounted a two-wave pilot study, incor-porating a mixed mode experiment in 2018-2019. The aim was to compare the standard SHP CATI-based fieldwork (and recruitment) strategy with two online alternatives: a mixed mode (telephone for the HRP interview plus web for individual household mem-bers) group and a web-only group (see Voorpostel et al., in press).
Now the pilot study is completed, the data will be made available to SHP data users. These data are especially suited to answer methodological research questions related to interview mode in household panels. As the study is based on a stratified random sam-ple and uses the complete SHP questionnaires, the data can also be used for substan-tive analysis. It is important to note, however, that the weights provided with the data do not weigh for the mode of data collection and the sample of the pilot cannot be easily combined with the main samples of the SHP.
