In this study, we examine connective protest mobilization and suppression during the 2021 protests in Russia. We use time series analysis to study the dynamic interplay between the pro-Navalny movement and pro-government countermovement on Twitter, complemented by network analyses of co-retweeting networks to assess the movements' coordination patterns. Findings show that pro-Navalny accounts were more active and coordinated within more centralized Twitter networks than pro-government accounts. Contrarily, the pro-government camp employed preventive communication tactics and coordinated in more clustered networks. Granger causality tests reveal that pro-Navalny tweeting activity triggered increased pro-regime reaction during the largest protests on 23 January and 21 April, whereas pro-government tweeting activity caused the escalation of pro-Navalny reaction during the 14 February protests. Both sides' tweeting activity decreased after the February protests, presumably due to external repression. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of online mobilization and coordination strategies via social media in authoritarian contexts.

For decades, scholars have been calling out a spatial turn in media and communication studies. Yet, in public sphere research, spatial concepts such as space and place have mainly been used metaphorically. In recent years, the abundance of digital trace data offers new opportunities to locate communicative interactions, sparking new interest in the spatial turn in media and communication and opening up new perspectives on spaces and places also within public sphere research. Digital location data enables one to: study the places and spaces in which (semi-)public communication is embedded; uncover geographical inequalities between countries, regions, cities, and peripheries; and highlight the local contexts of public spheres. This thematic issue gathers some of these endeavors in one place, bringing together conceptual, methodological, and empirical contributions that spell out the spatiality of public spheres in detail and combine the analysis of spaces, places, and geographies with long-standing concepts of public sphere research.

In times of genetically modified food, globalized production and distribution chains, food safety is a major issue in public policy. Although industrial actors have traditionally had remarkable influence on political decision-making in this area, challenger organizations from civil society have gained influence by mobilizing support and shaping public discourse on the Internet. The authors' study analyzes online issue networks concerning food safety in order to assess the actor constellations and coalitions that may serve as an opportunity structure for the mobilization of the issue. By comparing the US, the UK, Germany, and Switzerland, the authors investigate the differences in policy settings between pluralist and corporatist democracies. They find that the mobilization structures related to food safety issues are actively promoted by the challengers themselves. In countries where challengers do not find support within national politics, the challengers' online communication refers to mass media as witnesses to legitimize their concern in public debates.

We present Meteor, a new inventory for European news sources (i.e. EU  +  UK, CH, NO, IL): https://wp3.opted.eu/ . This inventory will facilitate researchers' efforts to select sources across platforms and gather related textual data. It contains the names of print and online news sources, social media accounts, news blogs, and alternative news media sources, as well as rich meta-information for each entry (e.g. language, audience size, topical focus, ownership structures, access to full-text archives, secondary data, related research). Meteor accounts for the fuzziness of hybrid media systems through an interlinked knowledge graph. Entries are submitted by researchers, validated, continuously updated, and openly accessible to the public. Our inventory allows users to find various European news sources based on a wide range of criteria, putting scholars in a better position to navigate the European media landscape.

In this study, we theoretically conceptualize and empirically investigate translocal spatial arrangements of networked public spheres on social media. In digital communication networks, actors easily connect with others globally, crossing the borders of cities, nations and languages. However, the spatial notions evoked in public sphere research to date remain largely territorial. We propose a theoretical framework drawing on Löw's sociology of space, which highlights the relational and translocal nature of spatial arrangements. In a case study of the translocal interaction network of Berlin Twitter users, we demonstrate how this framework can be leveraged empirically using network analysis. Despite the overall network of Berlin's Twittersphere spanning the whole world, we find territorialized as well as deterritorialized translocal communities. This points to the simultaneity of territorial and networked spatial logics in digital public spheres.

Die in diesem Jahrbuch veröffentlichten Beiträge sind notwendigerweise nur eine Auswahl der auf der Tagung präsentierten Beiträge und können daher auch inhaltlich nur einen kleinen Ausschnitt des breiten Themenfeldes "Integration durch Kommunikation" vermitteln. Diesen Ausschnitt ergänzen wir hier in Form eines überblicksartigen Tagungsberichts. Es werden die inhaltlich relevanten Aspekte aus dem Call for Papers vorgestellt und durch die Autor*innen und Titel aller auf der DGPuK Jahrestagung 2019 in Münster gehaltenen Vorträge ergänzt.

Integration und Desintegration sind nicht notwendig Gegensätze, sondern immer auch zwei Seiten derselben Medaille. Integration ist nie total, sondern indirekt und unbewusst auch abgrenzend, ausschließend. In diesem Band geht es insbesondere um die integrierenden und desintegrierenden Mechanismen der digitalen bzw. digitalisierten Kommunikation. Vor diesem Hintergrund führt die Einleitung in die Beiträge dieses Proceedings ein und diskutiert schließlich den gesellschaftlichen Stellenwert digitalisierter Kommunikation in Bezug auf Integration und Desintegration.

Kernstück jeder Inhaltsanalyse ist ein Kategoriensystem, das häufig induktiv-qualitativ an einer kleinen Stichprobe von Texten entwickelt wird. Methoden des Text Mining ermöglichen es heute, eine nahezu unbegrenzte Anzahl an Texten effizient, schnell und nachvollziehbar zu explorieren. In diesem Beitrag wird ein Verfahren vorgeschlagen, bei dem solche Methoden eingesetzt werden, um induktiv aus einem umfangreichen Textkorpus Kategorien für eine Inhaltsanalyse zu bilden. Diese Methoden werden mit einer qualitativen, manuellen Inhaltsanalyse kombiniert. Die Kombination verschiedener Verfahren besteht darin, dass zunächst mittels Text Mining thematische Oberkategorien aus einem vorliegenden Textkorpus extrahiert, anschließend manuell validiert und in einer qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse um Unterkategorien erweitert wurden. Das Vorgehen wird beispielhaft an einem Codebuch erläutert, welches im Rahmen der Auswertung des "Bürgerdialogs" der Bundesregierung "Gut leben in Deutschland" zum Thema Lebensqualität entwickelt und angewendet wurde. ; At the core of every content analysis is a codebook of relevant categories, frequently developed qualitatively based on a small sample of texts. Currently text mining methods enable us to explore an almost unlimited number of texts in an efficient, fast, and comprehensible manner. In this article, we suggest a procedure for codebook development using these methods to inductively derive coding categories from a large text corpus for content analysis. These methods are combined with qualitative, manual content analysis. First, we derive thematic main categories from a text corpus via text mining. In a next step, we then manually validate these categories and add sub-categories via qualitative content analysis.
