If it is true that geological discontinuities, as well systemic, like climate change, overpopulation, depletion of traditional energy sources, are evidences that today can hardly be questioned, this article intends to address, through the perspective of recorded history and deep history, those particular contributions that, in the complex warp of narratives that emerged on a global level, have proposed interpretations that resort to Malthusian and Neo-Malthusian paradigms. In this perspective of investigation, it is clear the role of the recent global crisis as a historical-economic phenomenon that has triggered countless debates about the overall stability of the system and accelerated the appearance of numerous questions about political-economic scenarios and the related political and social implications to come. ; Se è vero che discontinuità geologiche oltre che sistemiche come il cambiamento climatico, la sovrappopolazione, l'esaurirsi delle tradizionali fonti energetiche, sono evidenze che difficilmente oggi possono essere messe in discussione, il presente articolo intende affrontare, attraverso la prospettiva della recorded history e della deep history, quei particolari contributi che, nel complesso ordito di narrazioni emerse a livello globale, hanno prospettato interpretazioni che ricorrono a paradigmi malthusiani e neomalthusiani. In questa prospettiva di indagine risulta evidente il ruolo della recente crisi globale quale fenomeno storico-economico che ha innescato innumerevoli dibattiti circa la tenuta complessiva del sistema e accelerato la comparsa di numerosi interrogativi circa gli scenari politico-economici e relative implicazioni politiche e sociali a venire.

La storia del pensiero politico è da poco più di un decennio attraversata da una trasformazione legata all'emergere di tendenze storiografiche che, sotto i nomi di world history e di global history, stanno profondamente rinnovando - seppur con esiti fra loro molto diversificati - il panorama degli studi storici. A conferma di ciò possono essere invocate affermazioni provenienti da alcuni eminenti studiosi della nostra disciplina: Antony Black ha scritto che è sbalorditivo constatare come, fino ad oggi, nessuno si sia cimentato con questa impresa; David Armitage ha sostenuto che, per quanto una storia globale del pensiero politico debba ancora essere scritta e sebbene si possa lungamente discutere su cosa essa dovrebbe includere o come andrebbe concepita, resta il fatto che gli storici del pensiero politico stanno ampliando il respiro delle loro ricerche per andare in direzione di una storia globale; John Dunn si è spinto fino ad affermare che una storia globale del pensiero politico rappresenta oggi un obiettivo scientifico (e politico) ineludibile. A fronte di ciò, vale la pena di iniziare interrogarsi su quali trasformazioni l'ecumene storiografico mondiale e globale stia introducendo nella storia del pensiero politico.

This paper contributes to the debate on institutions and economic development by assessing the relationship between landownership concentration and education in Post-Unification Italy (1871-1921). Using historical data both at a district- and provincelevel, I nd evidence of a negative eect of land inequality on literacy rates. This result is conrmed when a large set of control variables is included in the analysis. IV estimates using the presence of malaria as a source of exogenous variation rule out further concerns regarding the presence of potential endogeneity. Further evidence is provided once I explore the panel dimension of the dataset. In addition, by analysing the impact on intermediate outputs such as enrolment rates in primary school, child-teacher ratio, school density, child labor and municipality expenditures, this paper provides insights on the mechanism behind this relationship. Land inequality may have adversely aected literacy rates not only by influencing the supply of schooling through the political process, but also through the private demand for education.

Alla fine del sec. XV, gli Europei scopritori dell'Africa occidentale trovarono che il cavallo era impiegato nel Benin e nei vicini paesi yoruba. Poiché non si conosce l'esistenza di antenati selvatici dell'Equus caballus in questa o in alcuna altra zona dell'Africa, si trattava di equini importati. Sulla base di argomenti zoologici, archeologici, storici ed etnologici, il presente articolo intende chiarire tempi e modi di tale introduzione.Il cavallo e anche qui essenzialmente animale da guerra e simbolo di prestigio sociale: il suo arrivo, dall'Africa settentrionale per via del Sahara, è connesso con l'impiego del carro da guerra. L'A. discute brevemente le questioni della iniziale domesticazione equina, dell'uso e della diffusione dei carri ippotrainati, delle singolari raffigurazioni di questi nello stile del «galoppo volante» tipico dell'arte minoico-micenea e presente tra l'altro nelle figurazioni rupestri sahariane; e delle presumibili relazioni commerciali che dovettero indirettamente collegare quest'ultima area, e quella del Mediterraneo occidentale nell'eta del bronzo, con le zone oltre il Sahara. Di qui, secondo l'A., giunse il cavallo nel bacino del Niger, mentre piu deboli sono considerate le possibilita di connessione degli stati dell'Africa occidentale con Kush e Meroe. Se però l'evidenza archeologica suggerisce per tali contatti epoche non posteriori al II millennio a.C., queste appaiono di molto anteriori ai tempi in cui si presume siano sorti in Africa occidentale stati in grado di sfruttare corpi di caval- leria: il piu antico stato locale di cui si abbia notizia, il Ghana, non risale a prima del IV sec. d.C. Fra le ipotesi relative al destino del cavallo in queste zone durante il lungo e oscuro intervallo, l'A. tende a scartare quella di un rinselvatichimento della specie come si sa essere avvenuto in America; egli pensa piuttosto a un uso del cavallo come animale da sacrificio, o a un suo persistente impiego per il traino di carri; meno probabile il suo uso come cavalcatura, prevalso poi in epoca moderna. La piu antica varieta di Equus presente in Africa occidentale sarebbe infatti, secondo l'A., una razza di ponies di piccole dimensioni, poco atta a essere cavalcata; piu tardo sarebbe l'arrivo della piu robusta varieta berbera, di quella araba, di quella dongolana. Comunque impiegato agli inizi, il cavallo contribuì a trasformare in senso militare le ancor piccole comunita dell'area sudanese-guineana viventi di coltivazione e allevamento di tipo «neolitico»; e i contatti trans-sahariani che accompagnarono l'introduzione del nuovo nobile animale dovettero incoraggiare la fondazione dei primi stati della zona.

The problem of truth, from the point of view of a historian, arises in clearly different forms compared to those of scientists and probably also of social scholars of other disciplines. History is a narration of past events, but this narration is subject to an arbitrary selection of its parts, its documentation, the facts that make up the event under discussion. History is organized on the basis of documents, testimonies and biographical elements, but also of considerations on the structures of power, on the articulations of society and on the forms of political regimes. As the history of the 1900s amply demonstrates – of which the Shoah and the Nazi destruction of the Jews as well as Soviet communism, the history of Italy and McCarthyism in the United States, as well as the genocides of the 1990s, are touched on in this article – the interpretation of the events involved the greatest difficulty in identifying a recognized and shared truth.

This paper proposes a brief review of digital resources useful for historians, scholars, professionals and students who want to approach Public History and which can offer opportunities for exploration and participation at several levels. The analysis has been divided into four parts, each starting from an exploration of the Italian context and then moving on to international resources: 1. Web spaces of national and international associations, 2. Oral History and Digital History, 3. Public History Journals , 4. Apps and Databases.

Citizen science (CS), "citizen science" or "participatory science", refers to the participation and active involvement of citizens in scientific research activities. While CS includes natural sciences, such as biology, chemistry and physics, and citizen social science deals with societies, citizen humanities apply to historical, literary, linguistic and philosophical disciplines. Digital public history, due to its public, participatory and collaborative vocation in a digital context, presents itself as one of the privileged fields of application of citizen humanities. The added value of citizen humanities depends primarily on two conditions underlying the digital public history: the participation of historians who do not come from the academy in the creation of collaborative projects and the communication of the results of historical research to the public on the network. The article intends to reflect on how collaborative writing, made possible by wiki tools, can be an excellent starting point for a participatory democracy that is located in the wake of citizen humanities. ; La citizen science (CS), "scienza dei cittadini" o "scienza partecipata", indica la partecipazione e il coinvolgimento attivo dei cittadini in attività di ricerca scientifica. Mentre la CS include le scienze naturali, come la biologia, la chimica e la fisica e la citizen social science si occupa delle società, le citizen humanities si applicano alle discipline storiche, letterarie, linguistiche e filosofiche. La digital public history, per la sua vocazione pubblica, partecipativa e collaborativa in un contesto digitale, si presenta come uno dei campi di applicazione privilegiata dalle citizen humanities . Il valore aggiunto delle citizen humanities dipende primariamente da due condizioni alla base della digital public history: la partecipazione degli storici che non provengono dall'accademia alla creazione di progetti collaborativi e la comunicazione dei risultati della ricerca storica al pubblico della rete. L'articolo intende riflettere su come la scrittura collaborativa, resa possibile dagli strumenti wiki, possa costituire un ottimo punto di partenza per una democrazia partecipata che si situi nel solco delle citizen humanities.

Libraries, through services, activities, professionals and citizens, can be made active places of the dialectic between politics and history, memory and history, local reality and global reality, institutional and personal experience, and past and present, thus educating the society to history and citizenship. A fruitful way is to study and enhance the cultural heritage that the libraries own and the one they have access to, deconstructing it, redefining it and redistributing it in new forms; in this regard, it may be useful to rely on practices and opportunities concerning a public engagement and derived from the disciplinary and civil context of public history. ; Le biblioteche, attraverso i servizi, le attività, i professionisti e i cittadini, si possono fare luoghi attivi della dialettica tra politica e storia, memoria e storia, realtà locale e globale, esperienza istituzionale e personale, passato e presente, educando così il pubblico alla storia e alla cittadinanza. Una strada fruttuosa è quella di studiare e valorizzare il patrimonio che possiedono e a cui hanno accesso, decostruendolo, ridefinendolo e ridistribuendolo in nuove forme; a questo proposito può essere utile appoggiarsi alle pratiche e alle opportunità di public engagement che derivano dal contesto disciplinare e civile della public history.

In his History of Greece, George Grote celebrates the Athenian democracy and considers it an exemplary political regime. Grote despises oligarchy and believes that Athenian popular sovereignty has put an end to factional struggles. In particular, the reform of the courts ensured respect for the law and prevented the strongest and richest from taking power. However, the popular dikasteries were also an effective system for controlling and governing the subjects of the maritime empire. Grote compares the Athenian rule with the British Empire: both are governments of dependencies, in which the subdued states freely manage their internal affairs, but depend on the dominant state in foreign policy. The disputes between Athens and its allies were discussed in the Athenian courts where, according to Grote, the Greeks found fairness and tolerance, and were thus rewarded for the loss of their autonomy. ; Nella History of Greece George Grote celebra la democrazia ateniese e la considera un regime politico esemplare. Grote disprezza l'oligarchia e ritiene che la sovranità popolare ateniese abbia posto fine alle lotte di fazione. In particolare, la riforma periclea dei tribunali garantì il rispetto della legge e impedì ai più forti e ai più ricchi di prendere il potere. Tuttavia, i tribunali popolari furono anche un efficace sistema per controllare e governare i sudditi dell'impero marittimo. Grote paragona il dominio ateniese all'impero britannico: entrambi sono governments of dependencies, in cui gli stati sudditi gestiscono liberamente i loro affari interni, ma dipendono dallo stato dominante nella política estera. Le controversie fra Atene e i suoi alleati erano discusse nei tribunali ateniesi nei quali, secondo Grote, i greci del tempo trovarono giustizia e clemenza, e furono così ricompensati per la perdita della loro autonomia.

In an increasingly interconnected reality, the areas of research look - necessarily - at a remodelling of the IT architectures of archival portals, with the aim of an interdisciplinary vision capable of connecting the Present with the Past, in order to identify historical narratives and patterns able to enrich the epidemiological pictures, explain the modern pandemics, to be able to modify and record policies suitable to contain and face those of contemporaneity. A reformulation that is based on the application, in historical research, of tools that can reformulate the concept of digitized source, in order to derive, from it, all the information that scholars refer to. Today, information technologies, such as Data mining and the application of HTR (Handwriting Text Recognition) systems - such as the Transkribus platform - would allow us to increase and implement the information available, pushing historians towards research areas and sectors that are still unexplored. ; In una realtà sempre più interconnessa, gli ambiti della ricerca dovrebbero guardare – necessariamente – ad una rimodulazione delle architetture informatiche dei portali archivistici, con la finalità di una visione interdisciplinare in grado di connettere il Presente col Passato, allo scopo d'individuare narrazioni storiche e patterns in grado di arricchire i quadri epidemiologici, spiegare le pandemie della modernità, per poter correggere e sviluppare politiche adeguate a contenere e fronteggiare quelle della contemporaneità. Una riformulazione che si fondi sull'applicazione, nella ricerca storica, di strumenti che possano riformulare il concetto di fonte digitalizzata, allo scopo di ricavare, da essa, tutte quelle informazioni di cui necessitano gli studiosi. Oggi, le tecnologie informatiche, quali il Data mining e l'applicazione dei sistemi HTR (Handwritten Text Recognition) – come la piattaforma Transkribus –, consentirebbero di incrementare e implementare le informazioni disponibili, spingendo gli storici verso ambiti di ricerca e settori ancora inesplorati.

"The spatiotemporal conjunction is a fundamental aspect of the juridical reflection on the historicity of law. Despite the fact that it seems to represent an issue directly connected with the question of where legal history is heading today, it still has not been the object of a focused inquiry. Against this background, the book's proposal consists in rethinking key confluences related to this problem in order to provide coordinates for a collective understanding and dialogue.
The aim of this volume, however, is not to offer abstract methodological considerations, but rather to rely both on concrete studies, out of which a reflection on this conjunction emerges, as well as on the reconstruction of certain research lines featuring a spatiotemporal component.
This analytical approach makes a contribution by providing some suggestions for the employment of space and time as coordinates for legal history. Indeed, contrary to those historiographical attitudes reflecting a monistic conception of space and time (as well as a Eurocentric approach), the book emphasises the need for a delocalized global perspective. In general terms, the essays collected in this book intend to take into account the multiplicity of the spatiotemporal confines, the flexibility of those instruments that serve to create chronologies and scenarios, as well as certain processes of adaptation of law to different times and into different spaces.
The spatiotemporal dynamism enables historians not only to detect new perspectives and dimensions in foregone themes, but also to achieve new and compelling interpretations of legal history. As far as the relationship between space and law is concerned, the book analyses experiences in which space operates as a determining factor of law, e.g. in terms of a field of action for law. Moreover, it outlines the attempted scales of spatiality in order to develop legal historical research. With reference to the connection between time and law, the volume sketches the possibility of considering the factor of time, not just as a descriptive tool, but as an ascriptive moment (quasi an inner feature) of a legal problem, thus making it possible to appreciate the synchronic aspects of the 'juridical experience'.
As a whole, the volume aims to present spatiotemporality as a challenge for legal history. Indeed, reassessing the value of the spatiotemporal coordinates for legal history implies thinking through both the thematic and methodological boundaries of the discipline."

The contribution aims to serve as a toolkit to provide a sort of 'how to' guide on some aspects that public historians need to take into account when planning public history activities, from sources to content dissemination. Two short sections are therefore proposed, which schematically refer to the main stages of the public historian's work on two levels: 'research' and 'representation'.

The introduction of civic education in the scholastic curriculum has offered to schools new opportunities for coping with the study of Resistance movement and other events occurred in contemporary history. Through some relevant didactic unit, the paper aims at giving to teachers some pratical examples, using the methodology of the Public History of Education.

The great transformations that have affected the function and the teaching role in recent decades, have undermined the mechanisms of traditional construction of professional identity. The Public History can be useful in reconstructing the forms and contents of teaching professionalism in a reflective perspective.
