This article presents the phenomenon of the refugee, as Hannah Arendt experienced it, to show its paradigmatic function. This was done by a philosopher Giorgio Agamben who tried to show the concept of a refugee as paradigmatic in sense that it has power to change the current theoretical concepts of political philosophy. The main thesis of the article is that not only the concept of refugee can serve as a paradigm, but many others so the emphasis of this article is on a theoretical meaning and a conceptual productivity of a paradigm. In the context of a Forum Junge Theologie and its main theme "transgressions - Grenzüberschreitungen", the concept of a paradigm is presented as a border-concept. Concept of a refugee as a border concept becomes a paradigm and in that way it can criticize the contemporary concepts such as state, citizenship and human rights and facilitate a new understanding of the society. The article, after presenting the argumentation of Agamben's interpretation of the concept of a refugee as a paradigm, ends with thoughts about possible ways of overcoming of the border, which man had defined. Maybe this can be achieved by new appreciation of a human as such and not only as a citizen. The realities of state would remain in some way, but the understanding of the border between states should be reconsidered and changed.
; Right-wing intellectuals often invoke Nietzsche's concept of slave morality to underpin their criticism of 'political correctness' ('PC'). This interconnection of Nietzsche's slave morality and 'PC' criticism is correct, as a systematic analysis of their common elements shows, which leads to a new description of 'PC' criticism as a defense of privilege. In contrast to the right-wing Nietzschean 'PC' critique, the left-wing Nietzschean concept of a privilege-critical 'political judgement' understands politics as a struggle for power, in which the space of the political and related discourses are always already regulated and determine the conditions under which resources and privileges are distributed. Therefore, it is appropriate for an emancipatory position to critically question the ...
The present doctoral thesis deals with the problem of the stability of democracy, given the permanent threat of its self-destruction. This problem does not only arise in the light of an allegedly acute crisis of a democracy torn between its populist excitation and its technocratic exsiccation. Ever since its spread in the twentieth century, the democratic form of government was accompanied by worried voices that warned – from different perspectives – of the danger of its self-destabilisation. Against this background, the first part of the thesis searches for traces in democratic theory. I discuss and confront influential theoretical positions, that either find the main danger or the salvation of democracy in its radicalisation or in its restriction. This reconstructive work is, on the one hand, supposed to shed light on the strained ambiguity of the democratic promise of collective self-determination. On the other hand I want to make plausible that this internal ambiguity is tightly linked precisely to the problem of democratic self-endangerment. The second part of the thesis understands this problem as a challenge that seems to be successfully met in real existing democracies of our time. In four steps, I will focus on factors that are capable of mediating between the radical and the restrictive poles of democracy and that presumably weaken the potential of democratic self-destruction. In the spheres of right, political ethics, pedagogy and culture, I will therefore search for resources for the sustainability of the democratic form of government and way of life. It will thereby become clear, first, that the mentioned ambiguity of the democratic promise reappears in all of these spheres. Second, the analysis will lead to the insight that the stability of democracy depends to a great extent on the everyday impact of supposedly pre-political contexts of interaction and experience. Thus, in a sense, the thesis is a plea for a theoretical sensibility and a practical concern for those often inconspicuous everyday practices, meeting places, institutional gestures and symbolic messages, that inadvertently prepare and maintain the ground on which the fragile frame of democracy can stand.
In his Prolegomena to Historiosophy, published in 1838, August von Cieszkowski wrote that we are at the turning point in history, when facts turn into deeds. This raises the question of what is actually to be understood by the term "deed" [Tat] and why, the hour of the deed should have come precisely now. After focusing on Hegel's concept of a history of freedom, I will present two models of understanding action and conclude by discussing their consequences. More specifically, I will undertake a search that will lead us – by way of a detour via Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit – to Fichte's concept of the act of doing. That socio-political practice can be justified in this way, however, is denied by those who argue that society and politics in Hegel fall under the category of objective and not of absolute spirit. The alternative model of action that I will focus on, concerns action in relation to objects, or labour, a model that Hegel had already worked out in Jena, and that Marx will re-discover (rather than invent) and further develop.
; Background: Many theses of the political theories of Thomas Hobbes and Baruch de Spinoza can only be understood by referring to their philosophical and natural-anthropological approaches. Their respective interpretations of the nature of mankind are based on a philosophical determinism which, however, in view of the different theory of human nature that derives from it, leads to very different conclusions with regard to human coexistence.Aim: This master thesis tries to demonstrate, that Spinozas political philosophy is based, like Hobbes, on naturalistic and realistic anthropological foundations; however, unlike Hobbes, it does not go as far as to lead to political realism. Method: The work will be structured in three main parts. In the first part, the most important features of both authors political and conceptual premises of the sovereignty theory will be exposed. In the second part, the connection between nature and mankind in the thinking of both authors will be illustrated. In the last part of the master thesis the political and natural-anthropological preconditions, which were examined respectively in the first and second part, will intertwine so that the divergent political philosophy of the two authors can be emphasized and explained. Results: The third part of the thesis is intended to show that Spinozas political philosophy does not only pursue efficient and goal-oriented policies but also aims to extend social freedom and individual's power. Conclusion: The political philosophy of Spinoza is a consistent implementation and/or improvement of Hobbes' political and anthropological thought.
But it also has a political-philosophical history and it is going through several changes. The prelude is the political philosophy of the 19th century. Abruptly was no longer the topos of recognition in the center of the discussion, but the master-servant relationship. The economic- philosophical turn in the irreconcilable opposition between capital and labor dominates the master-servant discussion since the 1840s until the publication of the Jena Hegel''s early writings. In practical politics it dominated until the collapse of the Soviet Union. The thesis begins with a state of the most important research published in Germany since 1931 discussion posts. As a result, the debate is carried out of the social philosophy in political philosophy. Not the socio-philosophical struggle for recognition, but the political and philosophical movement of recognition is the methodological guide through the last two centuries. Keywords: state, temporal and eternal justice, right and wrong. ; This paper tries to explain the systematic and ontological reasons for Schopenhauer's political philosophy, especially focussing on the relation between contractualialistic and metaphysical elements within his conception of the state. In this context, the aim of this paper consists in showing that Schopenhauer´s concepts of "right" and "wrong" within an institutional framework cannot be understood without the systematic context of "The world as Will and Representation", in particular the crucial kantian distinction between appearences and the thing in itself, which Schopenhauer identifies as "Will". The immanent implications of his metaphysical assumptions should therefore be regarded as the basis for public behavior and the general functionality of authority, which turns real existing states, penal codes and other institutional objecitvations into phenomenal manifestations of one universal substrate, which is Schopenhauer´s Will to live. (DIPF/Orig.) ; Topics of the conference of the German Association of Research in Music Education (AMPF) 2011 were concepts, practices, and political dimensions of music education. The broad discussion about different action theories that is going on in philosophy and the theory of education has also left its mark on the theory of music education. The contributions to this volume focus on the many different aspects of music education: theories of memory and remembrance stand next to reports on empirical research; intercultural themes as well as the relationship between music theory and music education receive attention. Methodological reflections and contributions from the philosophy of science fill out the picture. (DIPF/orig.)
Fernand Mathias GUELF ; With Lefèbvre the theory of global urbanization requires a comprehensive intellectual confrontation, which manifests central elements of sociopolitical and philosophical relevance in the transition from rural to urban structures. Taking the concrete political situation in Paris in the sixties as a starting point, Lefèbvre's provocative thesis that the examination of "praxis" is a critique of everyday life ("critique de la vie quotidienne") develops from questions and concepts of evolution theory, leading on to aesthetical debates concerning central problems of urbanism. Widely differing aspects are integrated step by step into a comprehensive concept. On the one hand the practical orientation of the theory of global urbanization, documented by political and social everyday life, on the other hand the philosophical dimension, the creation of a second, urban nature, originating from the rural, as a process of human development. Both versions, partly complementary, partly difficult to integrate into a conclusive concept, are taken into account in the dissertation. The philosophical alignment is elaborated progressively by means of references to the practical and theoretical context and by integration into the complete works. The use of the original text, unavoidable due to some misleading translations and the unwieldiness of several passages, stands for the intention of a firsthand representation and interpretation. The difficulties and challenges in providing as comprehensive a portrayal as possible lie in the fact that Lefèbvre's writings about the city can be read on different levels. Methodologically, the dissertation responds to the theory of global urbanization with a portrayal of "La révolution urbaine", as a base from which to take up central elements and aspects anew and develop them further. In the course of the dissertation a gradual consolidation takes place, which allows the theory of global urbanization to be portrayed and interpreted "fugally" as the central statement of Lefèbvre's philosophy. Defining the city as "oeuvre" and global urbanization as "oeuvre total" allows the "strategic hypothesis" of global urbanization to be interpreted within the context of the philosophy of praxis, above and beyond any sociological dimension, and Lefèbvre to be placed in a philosophical context. The relation to the present day results from a selective evaluation and from the attempt to update the theory of urbanization. Fernand Mathias GUELF

Abstract"Capability" has become a central term in political philosophy and welfare policy. But it is also an ambiguous term. This paper attempts both to clear up its different meanings and to discuss the heuristic potential of the capability approach for political philosophy. For this purpose, the author analyses not only the well-known capabilities approach of Martha Nussbaum and Amartya Sen, but more particularly its reception in Christian social ethics. Finally it investigates the relationship of both the capability approach and Christian social ethics with the idea of liberalism and whether and how these concepts ensure a "liberal minimum" that guarantees the freedom of each individual.
