The tendency of functionalism in social scientists' thinking about race & ethnicity is historically surveyed & criticized. The notion of cultural relativism is argued to give rise to contradictory attitudes, humanist & anticolonialist on the one hand, segregationist & implicitly racist on the other hand. Anthropologists come in for extensive criticism for overemphasizing instinct, drawing general conclusions from insufficient evidence (eg, breastfeeding practices), & ignoring SE factors, especially SC phenomena. Positing a universality to the ethnocultural DofL in some societies has the effect of placing responsibility for job market discrimination on the Wc. 3 Illustrations. J. Anderson
