Propaganda ist eines der zentralen Instrumente politischen Handelns in der Moderne. "Ohne Propaganda kann gar nichts verbreitet werden, keine Philosophie und keine Seife. Propaganda ist das Medium aller Werte geworden", bekannte einst der Schriftsteller Erich Kästner. Trotzdem sind Propaganda und verwandte Kommunikationsformen wie Public Relations in der sozialwissenschaftlichen Diskussion nach wie vor nicht hinreichend erforscht. Weder Politik- noch Kommunikationswissenschaften haben bislang herausgearbeitet, welche demokratietheoretischen, soziologischen und kognitionspsychologischen Annahmen und Basistheorien dem Konzept von Propaganda zugrunde liegen. Diese Lücke schließt das vorliegende Buch. Durch eine theoriegeschichtliche Betrachtung verschiedener Forschungsansätze wird deutlich, mit welchen Prämissen und Zielen Propagandaforscher und -praktiker im 20. Jahrhundert operierten. Die Studie leistet damit einen Beitrag zur Geschichte der Kommunikationswissenschaft. Zudem zeigt sie auf, mit welchen Strategien politische Eliten ihre Herrschaft zu sichern versuchten und welche Dienstleistungsfunktion die Sozialwissenschaften bei der Ausübung sozialer Kontrolle einnahmen. "Diese Studie ist ein substantieller Beitrag zur Geschichte der Kommunikationswissenschaft und eine wichtige wissenssoziologische Analyse der unterschiedlichen Theorieansätze der Propagandaforschung.
