Society is presently living an interesting event: laicity and democracy are permeating its deepest roots. Each continent is facing it in different ways but all of them present the same common denominator. For many people, religion has been outdated within the context of laicity and democracy, No place for a word in its favour should come from families or new generations. For some scholars, the undersigned included, the described situation could be a good stage to establish a constructive dialogue between families, education, State, politics, laicity and democracy… Such an environment has shades and lights but we can´t deny that it is a challenge to generate formative, dynamic and creative processus.
The great monotheistic religions –Judaism, Christianity, and Islam– agree in announcing God's love for men, while demanding men's love for God and for their neighbors. However, a brief look at these religions' praxis leads to doubt whether this love is not a mere statement, while in history and at present were and are still imposed exclusive truth claims exercising violence against the adepts of the own religion ("internally") and, in especial, against the followers of other religions ("externally") in order to attain political power. Now, a distinction between the just sovereign power of God and detrimental violence should be made, asides from the fact that God's sovereign power and God's concept is not the same in the three great monotheistic religions. In Judaism God governs with love and as king, in Christianity with love and as servant, in Islam with love and majesty. Nevertheless, sovereign power is exclusive of God and detrimental violence is never desired among men. Only thus is power constitutive of religion's inner nature, but not of the relation between religions or of religions with the world: "There is no coercion in religion".
; This article explores the problem of politics and religion in Jean-Jacques Rousseau from a philosophical perspective. In order to achieve this goal, this paper firstly shows how Rousseau conceives religion in his major works, and it emphasizes in their ambiguous and controversial character. After that, this paper analyzes the concept of civil religion based on the public role that it was called to play within the political community. Finally, this paper deals with the issue of whether the arguments behind Rousseau's proposal are the design of a civil or political religion; or is it a sort of political manipulation of religion, and in consequence, an element that evidences a link between Rousseau and other modern authors. The text does not purport to resolve the dilemma, but suggest that there are reasons to support either of these two readings of the work of the author.

The analysis represents sociological reflection about the contemporary religion and social conflicts in their most violent form. It is based upon the tragic vicissitudes of the crisis in former Yugoslavia having exploded in a cruel war. The course of events is approached as something having been easily predictable, and deeply embedded in the modern European political and social history, and, therefore, with high symptomatic relevance, to be interpreted not primarily as a kind of tail of the world of the XIXth century but as an extreme case of some current trends of wider dimensions. The war is interpreted as the almost unavoidable consequence of political strategies pursuing the same but diametrically opposed political objectives, best described by Mazzini's political formula "Every nation a state and only one state for every nation" or Gellner's sociological one "One nation, one culture, one state". Therefore, the crucial problem becomes the problem of the role of religion and churches in an area with mixed populations but dominated by opposed nationalism. The theoretical framework for interpretation of nationalist political strategies is taken from Gellner as well as from Offe. The crucial fact is that the nationalist political strategies or the ethnicification of politics have obtained not only mass support on the part of believers and belongers to the respective religious comunities but also their specific legitimacy in religious terms. Some major consequences of such a legitimization of nationalist political strategies are traced and described on three different levels and settings: a) a general level, b) a long range historical one, and c) a transitional one. The crucial conclusions arrived at are that an expected spiritual re-awakening focused upon a restoration of personal moral consciousness and renewed interest in spirituality and spiritual tradition has been practically inundated by a tidal wave of nationalization of the sacred and sacralization of the nation. Therefore, the most extensive religious revival has occured so far alongside to nationalist movements.
The paper examines the compatibility problems between democracy and religion. Problems of special importance when a strict idea of religion arises, with a strong sense of good and a strategy of particular foundation, when democracy is understood as deliberative democracy associated to an ideal of standard correction, an idea sometimes called republican democracy. If religion is understood as a private club its problems are diminished, away from an idea of good claiming its validity, or when democracy is strictly meant in a liberal sense, as a selection system of political elites.
