THE UKRAINIAN DIMENSION OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR: SCIENTIFIC DISCOURSE ; УКРАЇНСЬКИЙ ВИМІР ДРУГОЇ СВІТОВОЇ ВІЙНИ: НАУКОВИЙ ДИСКУРС

Abstract

The article highlights the most important aspects of the Ukrainian dimen- sion of World War II in terms of the present and Russia's opposition to the hybrid war against Ukraine on the "historical front". The authors tried for the first time to clearly define the concept of "Ukrainian dimension", traced the development and noted the achievements of historiography of the problem, revealed the place, role and significance of the Ukrainian factor in World War II, showed its consequences for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. Attention is focused on the key events, the scale and intensity of hostilities in Ukraine and the importance of the national liberation struggle. The contribution of Ukrainians to the victory is actualized, human sacrifices and material losses of Ukraine are characterized. A number of quantitative and qualitative indica- tors related to these aspects have been clarified. An attempt was also made to comprehend the impact of the war on the fate of the Ukrainian people and our present, its place in the national memory. Peculiarities and tendencies of per- ception and awareness of the Ukrainian society of this extraordinary historical phenomenon from the beginning of the XX century are revealed to this day. The results of the most recent sociological research conducted in April 2020, which determine the attitude of Ukrainians of different ages and residents of different regions of Ukraine to the Second World War, its results, in particular to the Victory Day, are presented and briefly analysed. This attitude is gener- ally ambiguous, in most cases showing a lack of unity, but in comparison with opinion polls on similar issues conducted before the Russian aggression, there is a tendency to gradually move away from the Soviet and Russian perception towards the Ukrainian and European views.The authors conclude that the result of understanding the Ukrainian dimen- sion of the Second World War should be an understanding of all its tragedy for the Ukrainian people, senseless cruelty and the terrible price that Ukrainians, among others, paid. And at the same time – to comprehend the greatness of the heroism and sacrifice of the Ukrainian people, to honor the memory of the fallen heroes and victims of the war. In the current context of repelling Russian aggression and countering the ongoing hybrid war, this is especially relevant. ; У статті висвітлено найважливіші аспекти українського виміру Другої світової війни з погляду сьогодення та протидії сучасній російській гібрид- ній війні проти України на "історичному фронті". Автори спробували чіт- кіше визначити поняття "український вимір", прослідкувати його появу і відзначили здобутки історіографії цієї проблеми, розкрили місце і значення українського чинника у Другій світовій війні, показано її наслідки для України та українського народу. Увагу акцентовано на ключових подіях, масштабах і запеклості воєнних дій на теренах України, значенні та місця національ- но-визвольної боротьби. Актуалізовано внесок українців у перемогу над на- цизмом, охарактеризовано людські жертви і матеріальні втрати України. Уточнено низку кількісних і якісних показників, пов'язаних з цими подіями. Здійснено спробу осмислити вплив війни на долю українського народу та його сьогодення, її місце в національній пам'яті. Розкрито особливості і тенден- ції сприйняття й усвідомлення українським соціумом цього непересічного іс- торичного явища від початку ХХ ст. до наших днів.
