Abstract

Smoking affects body composition by reducing the synthesis of muscle and fat, and therefore the physical performance (Stavropoulos, 2008). The aim of this study was to describe the sociodemographic and anthropometric profile in Students from "General José María Córdova" Military School of Cadets in relation to smoking. This is an observational descriptive and transversal study in 69 students from the Military School, belonging to the second cohort of 2012 who signed informed consent endorsed by the ethics committee of the University Manuela Beltran. We analyzed anthropometric and sociodemographic variables in relation to smoking. Somatotype was determined by participants in both groups. A subgroup (n = 33) who performed a field test (Test leger), we examined the cardiovascular risk in relation to waist circumference 21.7% of the population (n = 15) were current smokers, 7.2% (n = 5), were passive smokers, 27.5% former smokers (n = 19) and 43.4% (n= 30) nonsmokers. The average age of participants was 19 ± 1years. Although the subgroup test conducted Leger was no difference in waist circumference between smokers and nonsmokers (79 ± 5.7 and 74.7 ± 5.4 respectively) as well as indirect oxygen consumption (43.6 ± 6.3 and 49.9 ± 7.8) in no case showed cardiovascular risk. ; El tabaquismo afecta la composición corporal mediante la reducción de la síntesis de músculo y grasa, y con ello el rendimiento físico (Stavropoulos, 2008).
