Abstract

This essay examines the case of the Italian immigration in the Colombian Caribbean region between the ends of the nineteen century to the Second World War. The analysis of the Italian and Colombian sources of different nature- bibliographic, documents files, literary, iconographies, oral- let to reconstruct the experiences of the Italian community in Barranquilla and in other areas as the banana plantation region as Calabria, Basilicata, and Campania and with an urban character which had an emphasis in the business activity, being composed by artisans and small rural owners, who were often political guided. Between the two world wars, the socialist inspiration of many immigrants were in conflict with the fascist organization project of the established Italians abroad, while their social upgrade- in craft, trade and industry-open many times the way to attaches to the freemasonry and contributes in an special way to modernize the reception zones. ; Este ensayo examina el caso de la inmigración italiana en la región del Caribe colombiano entre el final del siglo XIX y la Segunda Guerra Mundial. El análisis de fuentes italianas y colombianas de variada naturaleza- bibliográficas, archivísticas, literarias, iconográficas, orales- permite reconstruir las vicisitudes de la comunidad italiana presente en Barranquilla y en otras áreas como la región bananera del Departamento del Magdalena. En Colombia la inmigración italiana porcede de regiones como Calabria, Basilicata y Campania y con un carácter urbano tuvo un énfasis en la actividad empresarial, siendo conformada por artesanos y pequeños propietarios campesinos, a menudo orientados políticamente. Entre las dos guerras mundiales, la inspiración socialista de muchos inmigrantes se pone en conflicto con el proyecto fascista de organización de los italianos establecidos en el extranjero, mientras su ascenso social- en la artesanía, el comercio y la industria- abre muchas veces el camino para la adhesión a la masonería y contribuye notablemente a modernizar la región de acogida.
