Tourism as an engine of growth: Reflections on Cuba's new development strategy

Abstract

Cuba has given international tourism a key role in new development strategy since the beginning of the 1990s. The Cuban development strategy explicitly refers to the bouyant tourism industry as an engine of growth. This paper discusses the tourism boom in Cuba, its main actors, its effects on the national economy so far, and the sustainability of the new development strategy in a longer perspective. (CDR/DÜI)
