Abstract
In this article the main theories of race in Brazil are critically reviewed in the light of contemporary politics. The author focuses largely on postwar Brazilian racial theory, beginning with the pioneering UNESCO studies. He believes that the literature on race in Brazil, despite its considerable strengths, suffers from a series of debilitating problems, including a neglect of the discursive and cultural dimensions of race
