Free trade and the Americas and sub-regional integration in Central America and the Caribbean

Abstract

This article examines the implications of four alternative models of hemispheric integration. The first scenario is the creation of a hemispheric wide system of free trade. The second possibility is for a broad system of free trade based on a series of overlapping bilateral arrangements. The third possibility is the emergence of a bipolar regional structure along North-South lines. A final scenario is the emergence of a constellation of sub-regional groupings, organized around the United States or NAFTA. (DSE/DÜI)
