Abstract
In the South Asian region, Sri Lanka was the first nation to adopt a trade and exchange liberalisation policy as far back as 1977. Until then, stringent import and exchange controls had been in operation in the country. The article briefly discusses income growth, inadequacy of savings and investment, employment generation, poverty, income inequality, human development, among other issues. (DÜI-Sen)
