Abstract
Since 1980, Cote d'Ivoire is going through an economic crisis which seriously affects the agricultural sector, the basis for its development, partly caused by poor sales on international markets. In view of promoting Cote d'Ivoire agri-food industries (AFI), chances for the domestic market to supplant the import market were evalued, using a static open model of Leontief. By measuring and comparating multiplier effects, the most favourable market for a sustainable development was identified. The results of this study show, on one hand, that multiplier effects are positive for both markets, and, on the other, that AFI with more diversified markets were those with the highest multiplier effects. However, the import market in general has experienced the largest growth in income. We observe that most AFI in Cote d'Ivoire have foreign capital, technology, and mangement. Based on multiplier effects analyses, it appears that AFI should increasingly turn their production toward the domestic and regional markets, which are promising and fast growing. Problems encountered by Cote d'Ivoire AFI have both internal causes. The future development of AFI will therefore be linked to programmes to stabilise and boost the economy in general.
