Abstract

Allen S. Whiting describes his first year of research in Taiwan in 1953 as the only American scholar in the entire country. The author published several articles, including interviews of soldiers among 14,000 People's Republic of China POWs who refused to voluntarily repatriate to China as agreed upon in the Korean War armistice negotiations; a volume exploring the life of Sheng Shih-tsai, who ran Sinkiang, a virtual Soviet satellite in the 1930s; & research on & an interview with Chang Ching-kuo, the son of Chiang Kai-shek.
