Burundi after the Civil War: Demobilising and Reintegrating Ex-Combatants
In: Africa Spectrum, Band 42, Heft 2, S. 323-333
Abstract
This article discusses the question of reintegrating ex-combatants after the civil war in Burundi. The field research of this study in 2006, based on a PhD thesis in progress, examined the questions of how ex-combatants were reintegrated into their communities in Burundi & what factors have influenced this reintegration. Burundi's independence in 1862 sparked a series of "ethnicized" massacres. The population consists of ca. 85 percent Hutu & ca. 14 percent Tutsi. Sadly, the conflict is & always was more about power than ethnicity. The article shows that the demobilization & reintegration process in Burundi has contributed to the fragile peace. So far, on a social level reintegration has gone fairly well but has not yet started on the economic level. References. E. Sanchez
