Abstract

Human rights do not only claim for 'universal', but also for 'egalitarian', 'categorical', 'identical' and 'indivisible' validity. But the fact that those normative validity claims do belong to the very idea of human rights does not mean, that those claims were already achieved or realized. This would only be the case when human rights were in fact globally enforced -- which might not happen in the near Future. Therefore the universalism of human rights should be understood as a 'project'; as universalism 'in the making'. Human rights are not universal yet, but they claim to become so. That leads to the conclusion, that the universalism of human rights is best be seen as a political process of 'universalization'. Adapted from the source document.
