Abstract
Introduces a discussion of the work of Richard Rorty with a brief sketch of Dewey's commitment to radical reform and to democratic communal life. Suggests that the pragmatic legacy Rorty constantly invokes will only be recovered and revitalised when a vision of a pragmatically viable ideal of communal democracy is articulated, textured and justified; this is what Dewey did in his historical context.
