On the Performativity of Gender: Gender Studies in Post-Soviet Higher Education

Abstract

In this article, I attempt to conceptualize my existential & institutional experience as the director of the Kharkov Center for Gender Studies acquired in the course of introducing gender studies into the system of post-Soviet higher education. The main subject of the article concerns the logical ground of gender discourse & the complicated relations between the notions of 'gender studies,' 'women's studies,' &, within the latter, 'feminism' in the former USSR, all in the framework of concepts from Western feminist theory.
