Abstract

Argues that Louis Bolce & Gerald De Maio's "Religious Outlook, Culture War Politics, and Antipathy toward Christian Fundamentalists" (1999) wrongly assumes that the public defines religious fundamentalists as purely religious, when their evidence shows that the public interprets fundamentalists in terms of cultural & political stances. The real issue is whether the public perceives Christian fundamentalists in religious terms, & Bolce & DeMaio's moral argument & indictment of other groups as bigoted is contended to foment the very distrust & intolerance they lament.
