Abstract

View that Yasir Arafat's refusal to accept Ehud Barak's ambiguous offer at Camp Davis 2000 caused him losing legitimacy as a peace partner and Ariel Sharon's visit to the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif sparked the second Intifada; argues that the Israeli and US positions of conditioning recognition of the Palestinian state' on Arafat's departure and democratization of the Palestinian Authority and Sharon's policies could provoke an existential war for Palestine as in 1948.
