"This book explores both theoretical and practical issues of language use in a migration context, using a mixed-method approach. The unique interview data on which the analysis is based (and therefore the lens through which these issues are viewed) stem from the German urban immigrant community in Canada, but the results and findings have implications for situations of migration throughout this increasingly globalized world. Through this transcontinental perspective, this book makes a new contribution to the literature on both language and identity and language and globalization. Drawing on an interactional analysis, the focus in this book is on the relationship between interactional intricacies and larger questions in society addressing the ways in which migrants' moves between places affects the construction of their identities as well as sociolinguistic spaces at large. This includes the dynamic positioning of migrants, the use of multilingual tools as well as non-linguistic resources and the ways in which language attitudes may affect all of these. "--

Using an epidemiological approach, we study the cultural influence on fertility outcomes of first- and second-generation female immigrants based on a 1% sample of the German population. We proxy for culture in the country of origin using total fertility rates from the year of migration, survey measures of fertility norms and cohort fertility rates from the year of birth. The last measure has not been used in the literature before. The large dataset allows us to focus on a relatively narrow range for age at migration and to estimate models that rely on within-country variation only, leading to more credible identification. We find a statistically significant, sizeable and robust impact of country-of-origin fertility rates on fertility outcomes. The impact works mainly through the intensive margin and less through the probability of having children. It is strongest in the first generation and becomes weaker for generation 1.5 (migrants arriving as children) and the second generation. The cultural influence is strongest for women with low education.

In contemporary discourse on China-Africa relations, there are, on the one hand, the Sino-pessimists who see China as a giant vacuum-cleaner, sucking up Africa's resources in order to fuel its own rapid industrialization, and destroying Africa's development potential in the process. On the other hand, the Sino-optimists see China as the ultimate savior of Africa, capable of or willing to 'develop' the continent. Between the two divergent schools of thought are those sitting on the fence for the time being, the Sino-pragmatists, who are less sanguine for sure about what Africa would gain from China-Africa relations, but are nevertheless willing to reserve judgment until the dust settles. This book is innovative in two ways: it introduces a regional approach to the study of China-Africa relations by focusing on Eastern and Southern Africa; and it puts forward a disciplinary framework- disciplinary in both senses of that term- for interrogating the burgeoning literature about China-Africa relations by conceptualizing the three schools of thought mentioned above.

In der wissenschaftsrechtlichen Literatur fehlte es bisher an einer Arbeit, die sich umfassend mit der wirtschaftlichen Betätigung der Universitäten auseinandersetzt. Die Lücke wird durch diese Arbeit geschlossen, indem die rechtlichen Probleme der universitären wirtschaftlichen Betätigung aus europa-, verfassungs- und hochschulrechtlicher Perspektive aufgezeigt und diesbezügliche Lösungsstrategien entwickelt werden. Es wird dargelegt, dass die Wissenschaftsfreiheit der wirtschaftlichen Betätigung der Universitäten wirkmächtige Grenzen setzt, und zwar sowohl im Verhältnis zu den Hochschulwissenschaftlern als auch im Außenverhältnis zu Dritten. Die hochschulgesetzlichen Regelungen hingegen sind überwiegend lückenhaft. U.a. dadurch entsteht eine Rechtsunsicherheit, die es verhindert, dass die Universitäten das ganze Potential der wirtschaftlichen Betätigung für sich nutzbar machen. Der Regelungsentwurf am Ende der Arbeit soll diesbezüglich Abhilfe schaffen. Ausgezeichnet mit dem Preis für Wissenschaftsrecht 2013. Kann man bereits von einem »Hochschulwirtschaftsrecht« sprechen? Inwieweit können universitäre Wirtschaftstätigkeiten durch das Verfassungs-, das Europa- oder das jeweilige Landeshochschulrecht legitimiert werden, inwiefern setzt ihnen die Rechtsordnung welche Grenzen? Auf diese Fragen gibt die Arbeit Antworten und zwar umfassend für die gesamte wirtschaftliche Betätigung von Universitäten. Dabei werden zugleich Risiken und Chancen, die für Universitäten aus einer Wirtschaftsbetätigung folgen, aufgezeigt und bewertet. Dr. Ilse-Dore Gräf wurde 1984 in Essen geboren. Nach ihrem Abitur im Jahr 2003 studierte sie Rechtswissenschaft an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum und absolvierte im Jahr 2009 die erste juristische Prüfung. Während des Studiums war sie Stipendiatin der Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes. Zudem erhielt sie 2007 das einjährige »Bronnbacher Stipendium« des Kulturkreises der deutschen Wirtschaft im BDI e.V. und der Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Von 2009 bis 2013 war sie wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Lehrstuhl von Prof. Dr. Martin Burgi an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum und arbeitete vor allem an dem Drittmittelprojekt »Neue Steuerung von Universitäten« mit. Gegenwärtig befindet sie sich im Rechtsreferendariat in Erfurt im Freistaat Thüringen.

Welcherart Normen sind Menschenrechte? Wie unterscheiden sich Menschenrechte von individuellen Rechten und von allgemeinen Forderungen der politischen Gerechtigkeit? Gibt es transnationale Menschenrechte? In ihrer Antrittsvorlesung diskutiert Christine Chwaszcza grundlegende Fragen einer philosophischen Theorie der Menschenrechte. In kritischer Auseinandersetzung mit individualrechtlichen und interventionistischen Auffassungen von Menschenrechten entwickelt sie eine institutionell-politische Interpretation, die die spezifische Funktion von Menschenrechten im Kontext nationalstaatlicher Institutionen und im Kontext des Völkerrechts sowie der Praxis der internationalen Beziehungen miteinander verbindet, ohne normativ relevante Unterschiede der institutionellen Struktur der beiden Ebenen zu verwischen. Eingehend diskutiert werden dabei der Zusammenhang von Menschenrechten und Rechtsstaatlichkeit, Menschenrechten und Demokratie sowie Menschenrechten und transnationaler Intervention. Christine Chwaszcza studierte Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Politische Wissenschaft, Soziologie und Philosophie an der LMU München, wo sie 1994 promoviert wurde. Die Habilitation erfolgte im Fach Philosophie 1999 an der Universität Kiel, wo sie bis 2004 weiter lehrte. 2004 war sie Gastprofessorin am Department of Philosophy der University of California at Los Angeles. Von 2005 bis Ende 2009 war sie Chair of Social and Political Philosophy am University Institute bei Florenz. Seit 2010 lehrt sie am Philosophischen Seminar der Universität zu Köln, wo sie die Professur für Politische Philosophie und Sozialphilosophie innehat.

This book illustrates the importance of global cities for world politics and highlights the diplomatic connections between cities and global governance. While there is a growing body of literature concerned with explaining the transformations of the international order, little theorisation has taken into account the key metropolises of our time as elements of these revolutions. The volume seeks to fill this gap by demonstrating how global cities have a pervasive agency in contemporary global governance. The book argues that looking at global cities can bring about three fundamental advantages on traditional IR paradigms. First, it facilitates an eclectic turn towards more nuanced analyses of world politics. Second, it widens the horizon of the discipline through a multiscalar image of global governance. Third, it underscores how global cities have a strategic diplomatic positioning when it comes to core contemporary challenges such as climate change. Rivalries are a fundamental aspect of all international interactions. The concept of rivalry suggests that historic animosity may be the most fundamental variable in explaining and understanding why states commit international violence against each other. By understanding the historic factors behind the emergence of rivalry, the strategies employed by states to deal with potential threats, and the issues endemic to enemies, this book seeks to understand and predict why states become rivals. The recent increase in the quantitative study of rivalry has largely identified who the rivals are, but not how they form and escalate. Questions about the escalation of rivalry are important if we are to understand the nature of conflictual interactions. This book addresses an important research gap in the field by directly tackling the question of rivalry formation. In addition to making new contributions to the literature, this book will summarize a cohesive model of how all interstate rivalries form by using both quantitative and qualitative methods and sources.
