Vor einem Jahrzehnt dominierten die Themen Fragmentierung und ungenügende Kohärenz die wissenschaftlichen Diskussionen auf dem Gebiet der Medien- und Kommunikationswissenschaft. Heute erscheinen solche Fragen als weniger brennend, wenn auch von Zeit zu Zeit immer noch problematisch. Theoretisch gesprochen lebt der gesamte Bereich gut mit seinen durchlässigen Grenzen, weil vieles an Theorie auf dem Kommunikationssektor "importiert" ist. Darüber hinaus bedarf es bei der Theorie einer undoktrinären kritischen Haltung, wenn man sich mit dem Leid dieser Welt befassen will. Die Systeme der politischen Kommunikation befinden sich in einem rapiden Transformationsprozess und es bedarf guter theoretischer Werkzeuge, will man sich mit diesem Wandel konfrontieren. Dieser Teilbereich ist immer noch weitgehend gefärbt von der traditionellen politischen Wisssenschaft; es gibt aber auch bedeutende Beitrage von Ansätzen zur "Public Sphere" und zu den "Cultural Studies". Alle drei haben ihre Stärken und Schwächen, alle haben ihre Differenzen, die respektiert werden müssen. Aber es gibt einige Anzeichen von Komplementarität und wenn man orthodoxe Positionen vermeidet, kann man im Zusammmenspiel aller drei Ansätze Synergieeffekte erzielen. (UNübers.)

"As China is increasingly integrated into the processes of economic, political, social, and cultural globalization, important questions arise about how Chinese people perceive and evaluate such processes. At the same time, international communication scholars have long been interested in how local, national, and transnational media communications shape people's attitudes and values. Combining these two concerns, this book examines a range of questions pertinent to public opinion toward globalization in urban China: To what degree are the urban residents in China exposed to the influences from the outside world? How many transnational social connections does a typical urban Chinese citizen have? How often do they consume foreign media? To what extent are they aware of the notion of globalization, and what do they think about it? Do they believe that globalization is beneficial to China, to the city where they live, and to them personally? How do people's social connections and communication activities shape their views toward globalization and the outside world? This book tackles these and other questions systematically by analyzing a four-city comparative survey of urban Chinese residents, demonstrating the complexities of public opinion in China. Since 2000, new women's movements emerge like Ni putes ni soumises (NPNS) who give a new approach to activism: not the one on feminists in the classical sense of the term with the connotations it carries, but women carrying claims in the media and through the media on the living conditions of the residents of the suburbs. So, many media will take part in the mediatization of NPNS and its discourses, and will serve in some way as a place of "factory" for the public opinion.

The author describes and analyses two types of communications in post-Mao mainland China's mass communications and transactional communications. He shows the liberating effect of communications. First published in 1986, The Politics of the Communications Revolution in Western Europe deals with the political implications of the communications revolution, specifically with impacts on political debate and agenda, the policy process, the role of the state, and European integration. The communications revolution in Western Europe combined radical changes in the fields of computing, broadcasting and telecommunications, converging in the new media, and is intimately linked to the wider information technology revolution. The economic and social implications of the communications revolution are wide-ranging and include: the electronic office, tele-banking and tele-shopping, decentralisation of economic activities, major transformations in the labour markets, and the strategic role of the electronics industry. This book will be of interest to students of European studies, history and media studies.

In recent years, both mass communication and personal communication have attracted increased interest as sources of persuasive information which influence individual voting decisions. However, few efforts have so far been made to investigate how mass communication and personal communication interact with regard to electoral decision making. Katz and Lazarsfeld's 'filter hypothesis' maintains that personal communication mediates the influence of mass communication on individual voters, reinforcing or blocking the impact of media information, depending on the evaluative implications of that information and on the political composition of voters' discussant networks. This hypothesis is examined and corroborated here, using comparable national election studies from Britain, Spain, the United States and West Germany. (British Journal of Political Science / FUB)
