This presentation was part of the AAAS Annual Conference professional development workshop, National Science Foundation and Ethics Education in Science and Engineering, during the recent meeting in San Diego, California (18-22 February). Dr. Michael Gorman, Program Director, Science, Technology & Society, National Science Foundation, moderated the workshop presentations and the discussion that followed. In addition, he contributed a set of powerpoint slides outlining the role of NSF in its response to the America Competes Act, including a commitment to support an online resource in ethics education. Dr. Philip Langlais, Vice Provost for Graduate Studies & Research, Old Dominion University, presented recommendations for developing institutional RCR and mentoring programs based on the new NSF and NIH RCR requirements. Dr. Kathleen Flint, Project Manager, National Postdoctoral Association, gave recommendations for unique RCR training needs of postdocs and reported on the NPA "Bring RCR Home Project," a national project that worked to develop local RCR programs for postdocs. Dr. Jane Fountain, Professor of Political Science and Public Policy, and Director of the National Center for Digital Government and the Science, Technology & Society Initiative, University of Massachusetts Amherst, presented recent developments at ESENCe, one of the beta sites sponsored by NSF. The purpose of ESENCe is to preserve and widely disseminate a variety of materials on ethics and the responsible conduct of research in science and engineering disciplines. In addition, the presentation summarized recent development of cases, background notes and teaching materials regarding international dimensions of ethics education.

Mintzberg's version of emergent strategy is based on the idea that strategies are contingent on circumstances that change from time to time often very rapidly and therefore papers focused on strategy and detailed planning are limited in their practical application. The word strategy as far as Mintzberg is concerned is anathema, therefore, introducing a concept that has a misconception embedded in it. This paper claims that education for sustainable development and higher education institutions' survival depends on adopting postmodern thinking, in other words, digital transformation. This conceptual paper proposes a blueprint of a process for developing a series of agile potentially short-term conceptual solutions thereby embracing the expectation that the rate of change in societies is accelerating. This paper scrutinizes (a) the applicability of emergent strategy/strategic approach to higher education institutions, (b) how postmodernism influences higher education institutions to become digital hubs of commoditization of knowledge and (c) how the integrated capabilities of digital transformation build sustainability in education delivery. Structural Equation Methodology is proposed to examine the impact of postmodernism on the sustainable delivery of education in higher education institutions, and the need to foster relevant emergent strategies is also justified. The paper also develops new research propositions and managerial implications for driving optimistic digital education. Ultimately, it offers a framework for spear-leading effective and leading post-modernistic digital transformation. Emerging education technology, sustainable digital transformation and advanced use of robotic-human cognitive collaboration are experiencing a significant transformation. Universities play a vital role in enhancing engagement within higher education. One of the managerial implications of the results and discussion is the need for higher education institutions to provide taught leadership and planning in emergent strategy formulation and implementation. The findings confirm the significant importance of linking the Structural Equation Method and the postmodern strategic context in which we argue that higher education institutions require emerging rethinking.

Washington has had an inheritance or estate tax since 1901. The United States has had an estate tax in place since 1916. Initiative 920, which would have repealed Washington's estate tax in November 2006, was resoundingly defeated by the people, 62% to 38%. Our estate tax raises over $100 million annually, on average.

The purpose of the paper is twofold. Firstly, to formulate a definition of University social responsibility (which takes into account social expectations towards this institution and its internal determinants as well). The final result of this research is the definition built on two concepts. On one hand, it is a stakeholder policy, on the other hand, a whistleblower policy. These are the criteria of responsibility, that is to say, rules which make the institution transparent and open to social criticism. Secondly, the article tends to establish whether a university in Poland (treated as a dominant institution of knowledge) is rightly seen as an irresponsible partner of civil society. Form the business ethics perspective the university is the more responsible, the more intensive are its relations with the social environment represented by stakeholders and whistleblowers. When they do not play their parts properly, the relations must be considered dysfunctional. Additional explanation of this problem is provided by the theory of management. In a use of the concept of the final customer, public opinion can find out if it—really—is the main interlocutor of the university. Social partners of this institution focus their attention on politicians and public administration taken as the alternative final customer of the academic product. ; Publication of English-language versions of the volumes of the "Annales. PurposeThe purpose is to ascertain the state of sustainability in higher education (SHE) in Atlantic Canada (sustainability education/curriculum; research and scholarship; operations; faculty/staff development and rewards; community outreach and service; student opportunities; and institutional mission, structure and planning).Design/methodology/approachAll Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) member institutions in Atlantic Canada were sampled in 2005/2006 to examine sustainability performance. Data were collected using the sustainability assessment questionnaire (SAQ) and were triangulated with document, webpage, and additional survey research.FindingsThe majority of higher education institutions in Atlantic Canada are engaged in sustainable development work, most notably in the area of curriculum. Sustainability research and scholarship is spread amongst faculty and students; many institutions have inter‐ or multi‐disciplinary research structures to address sustainability questions across campus and in collaboration with community partners. Much unrealized potential remains within physical operations, faculty/staff development and rewards, and student opportunities. No single university emerges as the Atlantic Canadian SHE leader; Acadia University (Wolfville, Nova Scotia), St Francis Xavier University (Antigonish, Nova Scotia) and Mt Allison University (Sackville, New Brunswick) excel in a regional peers comparison.Research limitations/implicationsThe Atlantic Canada study commences a series of five regional SHE assessments in Canada.Practical implicationsThe study strengthens ongoing efforts for creative institutional solutions to reduce the ecological footprint of higher education institutions. It contributes to SHE knowledge transfer and capacity‐building.Originality/valueThe study is the first regional SHE performance assessment in Canada. It serves as a pilot study and strategic planning tool.

Adolescence is a time of rapid growth and development physically, emotionally, and cognitively. For girls it is a stage of life during which education, when effectively provided, can be transformative. One of the most significant problems in most developing countries is the failure of education systems to realize their potential for empowering adolescent girls by providing economically productive skills. Education during adolescence can protect girls from the risks of premature sexual initiation and allow them to postpone marriage and childbearing and experience a childhood without the burden of excessive domestic work. Schools have the potential to fully empower girls to translate learning and skill acquisition into remunerative employment, better health, effective citizenship, and gender equity in society later in life. This guide is one of a set of five GIRLS FIRST! Perspectives on Girl-Centered Programming thematic reviews addressing the five strategic priorities defined in the UN Joint Statement, "Accelerating Efforts to Advance the Rights of Adolescent Girls," which supports governments and partners in advancing key policies and programs for the hardest-to-reach adolescent girls.
