Sunday Sch's, vacation church Sch's, summer camps & conferences, released time, & church-related elementary & secondary day Sch's are the principal programs for religious instruction in the US today. A trend toward more nonpublic Sch's on the elementary & secondary levels can be observed. An opposite trend can be observed in higher educ. Organized attempts are being made to co-ordinate efforts in religious educ made in the home & by mass communications media with the efforts of the churches & the major faiths. In a broad sense, no institution which permits or encourages the discussion of ultimate values is without a religious aspect. The public Sch's, therefore, are brought within the pale of the discussion of religion & educ. An intelligent appraisal of the needs of the US for religious educ, narrowly or broadly understood, requires answers to questions which have not yet been researched. AA.

The authors examined the state of United States student academic readiness for higher education from a global perspective utilizing data from the Organization of Economic and Co-operation and Development (OECD) and Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), which tests over a half a million 15 year old student's skills and knowledge. These scores were compared to the expenditures per student according to GDP growth and relation to U.S. dollars to draw conclusions. While it is true that the United States is among the top nations in terms of expenditures per student per year, the United States does not score in the top nations when tested by PISA. The author's did not find a correlation between the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate and the PISA Scores. The authors also examined several OECD studies across age groups and national performance and the United States students performed below the national averages. The authors, however, suggest that the declining average GDP growth rates and deteriorating standard of living in the United States are related in part, to the weakening academic performance in the United States. While the statistical correlation between academic performance and economic growth rates has not been proven, the United States mediocre test results are still disquieting. It may prove true that it will take several decades before the correlation becomes statistically evident and, at that point, it may take a generation, or much more, for the United States to recover and become competitive globally once again.

Background: South India is the region incorporating the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and the union territories Pondicherry and Goa. Out of the total 313 dental institutes in India, about 135 colleges are situated in its southern states and union territories. The uneven distribution of institutes between states and union territories has led to lack of proper oral care to people and unemployment among dental graduates. AIM: This study aimed to analyse the current situation of dentistry in the south Indian states and union territories. Methodology: A thorough literature search was done to retract all the articles relating to Dental education and institutes in south Indian States. Information from the website of Dental Council of India, other state Dental Council, NITI Aayog was retracted. Main databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane etc. were also searched to obtain the information. Results: Most of the dental colleges i.e. about 48 are present in Karnataka. There are more private than government dental colleges in every south Indian state. In Karnataka there are 3413 undergraduate and 1170 postgraduate seats which is the highest. About 60 dental colleges were established during the year 2001-2010. In Goa there is only one dental college present. In Andhra Pradesh and Pondicherry there are no government seats available in the specialities of Pedodontics, Orthodontics, Oral pathology and Public Health Dentistry. In case of Telangana, the dentist population ratio is 1:35158. In the case of Pondicherry, for a population of 0.4% there are about 2.9% of dental colleges present. Conclusion: A proper distribution of dental manpower for the people in need is the pressing priority now. If all the necessary actions are taken and the oral health burden is reduced, then dentistry will flourish in a country like India.

(DIPF/Orig.).;;;Schools offer powerful scope for viewing and comprehending the wider society in which they are produced and replicated. The ways in which schools are structured, positioned, funded, managed, appreciated, critiqued, cared for and neglected, presents us with a means for seeing beyond the rhetoric of a nation state to the lived realities faced by its citizens. In this paper the author wants to link the development of Australian educational policies to shifts in socio-cultural thought and practice that reflect and reproduce a mobile modernity. He is interested in school funding policies as they relate to the private, or non-government education sector from the late colonial period to these so-called neo-liberal/late modern times. The interrogated scenes shift about amongst a complex of interrelated fields, from the urban to the rural, the public and the private, as well as the primary, secondary and tertiary layers of educational "offerings". The periodization reveals a loosening of commitments to a secular, state-centred, welfare-focused modernity, towards a privatizing, individualizing "second modernity". Drawing from a range of empirical studies of school choice the author highlights the shifting ideas and practices of those involved in the re-production of both public and private schools either as professionals/workers in the system, or as "consumers" of the products available in education's "quasi-markets". (DIPF/Orig.).
