Y a-t-il une démographie des riches et une démographie des pauvres sous l'Ancien Régime ? C'est une question qui n'a reçu pour l'instant que des réponses partielles, et pourtant elle est importante et comporte sans doute plus d'implications encore qu'on ne peut le penser. Si l'on découvre de façon assurée que sous l'apparente unicité du régime démographique ancien se cachent en réalité des comportements assez différents et que ceux-ci sont fonction notamment de facteurs sociaux, on peut ainsi apporter d'abord une certaine contribution à l'histoire sociale, en montrant que les différences ne consistent pas seulement en des différences de niveau de vie et de place dans le système économique.

ABSTRACTThe argument of this essay is that current U.S. strategic postures and weapons systems, based essentially on mutual assured destruction (MAD), are defective, in that they over‐deter and under‐defend. MAD provides far more than sufficient deterrence against deliberate, full‐scale nuclear war launched by the government of the Soviet Union, but provides little deterrence and no defense against the far more likely nuclear catastrophe of the future: an accidental, unauthorized, or third‐party missile attack. The proposed solution is the reintroduction of superpower ABM (anti‐ballistic missile) protection, on a limited, negotiated basis, which could provide defensive systems heavy enough to defend against light attacks but not heavy enough to defend against full‐scale superpower attacks (and thereby undermine deterrence).

Gegenstand der Arbeit ist die Analyse der Interaktion und Kommunikation zwischen der Bevölkerung und Institutionen im Rahmen des Prozesses der Befriedigung fundamentaler Bedürfnisse. Es wird versucht, die optimalen Bedingungen des sozialen Wandels auf lokalem Niveau zu bestimmen, denn der Grad der Kommunikation zwischen der Bevölkerung und den zuständigen Institutionen ist ein wichtiger Parameter für den Erfolg des Transformationsprozesses. Der Aktionsstil der Institution - manupulierend, technokratisch oder den Bedürfnissen der Bevölkerung gegenüber aufgeschlossen - ist für den Grad der Kommunikation entscheidend. Diese Probleme werden untersucht am Beispiel von Djebel Lahmar, dem ältesten und bevölkerungsreichsten Viertel von Tunis, und den drei Sektoren Wohnungswesen, Beschäftigung und Gesundheitswesen, die als Indikatoren des sozialen Wandels angesehen werden. Skulls were aged for 4623 grey kangaroos (of both species), 1030 red kangaroos and 84 wallaroos taken by professional shooters in 1973 around eight towns in New South Wales. There was no significant difference in the proportion of adult (4-9 y) to old (10+ y) animals between areas, but there was a difference between red and grey kangaroos. The proportion of young (0-3y) animals, however, varied significantly between areas; this is attributed partly to variation between shooters.

A time-specific life table was constructed on the basis of a stationary age distribution; the annual survival was 0.661 for grey kangaroos, 0.729 for wallaroos and 0.790 for red kangaroos.

These rates seem influenced by the minimum carcass weights of 12, 13 and 16 kg for the three species respectively, and by the greater tolerance of graziers for red than grey kangaroos. The limitations and potentialities of these observations are discussed and the direction of future investigations indicated.
