This research is trying to explore the perceptions and beliefs of young ethnic Macedoniansregarding the EU, European and ethnic/national identity situated in an ambivalent societal context– an exposure to pro-European educational goals, together with the recently emerging reluctancetowards joining the Union.72 students with different study backgrounds at the age between 19 and 22 participated inthe study. In 10 focus groups, formed on the basis of homogeneity of the field of study, they werediscussing their views on the EU concept and their reflections on the congruities and incongruitiesbetween their national identity and the EU identity.Results show that respondents tend to idealize the concept of EU and are willing to acceptEuropean citizenship. On the other hand, some are skeptical and question the possibilityof developing European identity and citizenship because they perceive a serious gap betweenthe European values and the values that are dominant in the current public and political discourse.

Committed to exploring democratic ways of doing research with racialized migrant women and taking up the theme of "what citizenship studies can learn from taking seriously migrant mothers' experiences" for theory and practice this paper explores walking as a method for doing participatory arts-based research with women seeking asylum, drawing upon research undertaken in the North East of England with ten women seeking asylum. Together we developed a participatory arts and participatory action research project that focused upon walking, well-being and community. This paper shares some of the images and narratives created by women participants along the walk, which offer multi-sensory, dialogic and visual routes to understanding, and suggests that arts-based methodologies, using walking biographies, might counter exclusionary processes and practices, generate greater knowledge and understanding of women's resources in building and performing cultural citizenship across racialized boundaries; and deliver on social justice by facilitating a radical democratic imaginary.

Building on research on identity (e.g., Norton, 2013), intercultural communicative competence (e.g., Byram, 2008) and English as a lingua franca (e.g., Dewey, 2012), this article examines how the notion of a global citizen was constructed in a school-based ethnographic study involving students from Asia who were recipients of a Singapore government scholarship. Identity construction in this English-medium school was traced across four levels — national, school, classroom, and group interactions — in order to analyze the ways in which global citizenship was realized. Findings from the multiple data sets revealed that while a skewed interpretation of the global citizen was conceived at the school and classroom level, group interactions among students yielded promising indicators of how intercultural communication as mediated through English as a lingua franca could help produce students who are open minded and work actively to build relationships with others. The article closes with a discussion of possibilities for designing pedagogy to develop global citizenship education.

Evidence for Christine Williams's 'glass escalator' effect documents how professional men entering female-dominated occupations may advance more quickly toward authority positions and higher salaries. However, studies of men's benefits from occupational segregation have neglected low-wage and diverse groups of workers. Using the representative US National Nursing Assistant Study (NNAS), the article examines organizational measures of inequality and discrimination – wages, benefits and working conditions – to understand whether a glass escalator exists among nursing assistants and how it is affected by gender, race, citizenship and facility characteristics. Though gender inequalities were present, citizenship, race, facility type and size emerged as the most important factors in determining advantages for workers, suggesting a revision of the glass escalator metaphor may be in order. NNAS results imply that identity characteristics like nationality and contextual factors like workplace matter and underscore the importance of using an intersectional approach to examine inequality.

This text is based on an appraisal of theoretical developments in queer feminisms and seeks to translate such concerns to a field of inquiry that we call queer feminist critical psychology. The text uses the concept of homonormativity as a specific apparatus of heteronormativity to tackle sexual politics and neoliberalism and applied to two interrelated domains: citizenship and the family. Such a perspective entails a critique of these notions in terms of the exclusionary assumptions they are based on and read as an example of the effects of homonormativity. Issues of representability are also discussed within this framework showing how these family and citizenship concepts are only intelligible within the scope of certain assumptions of gender, sexuality and political economy. The article also analyses issues of recognition of humanity that are always already derived from these norms. The construction of alternative forms of knowledge, specifically queer feminist critical psychology, implies taking into account these intersected spheres to produce knowledge that is situated and attentive to these norms, for the purposes of deconstruction.

The aim of the article is to develop a critique of Europe as a cultural model for political integration. The author takes his departure in an image of Europe of nations, lands, and regions and grounds the critique of the European civilization on a Ancient Greek model of political community. The author raises a question of what is the main principle of civilization: culture or citizenship. He notes the immanent possibility of the culture to become a universal system of values and attempts to define citizenship as the basis of civilization. The author argues that the idea of human as a political being that is found in Greek philosophy from Solon to Aristotle stands in tension with a hierarchicaly organized political forms built around universalistic cultures. Such an argument is built around the interpretation of the ideas of Isocrates, who, drawing on Gorgias and late sophist philosophers, developed a critique of a notion of natural inequality between the Greeks and the Asian barbarians.

Few areas of taxation have been the subject of more controversy than capital gains and losses. In some countries, Canada for example, capital gains are excluded from the concept of taxable income, while in others such gains are partially excluded or are subjected to preferential tax rates. This article is divided into two parts. The first deals with the economic nature of capital gains and the relation of these gains to ordinary income. The second examines critically the arguments for and against the taxation of such gains. Basically, it will be argued that there is no fundamental fiscal difference between capital gains and "ordinary" income which could justify preferential tax treatment of the former. While the two types of personal economic accretion exhibit superficial distinctions, these are of little, if any, relevance from the standpoint of the income tax. It is admitted that more complete taxation of capital gains will present some complications. While the problems are suggested, their solutions are properly left to the lawyer, accountant, and legislator. Suffice it to say that solutions exist.The conceptual distinction between capital gains and ordinary income has been described as follows:In both law and common speech, capital gains are generally regarded as the profits realized from increases in the market value of any assets that are not a part of the owner's stock-in-trade or that he does not regularly offer for sale; and capital losses, as the losses realized from declines in the market value of such assets. Ordinary profits and losses, in contrast, are realized on the sale of goods and services that are a part of the seller's stock-in-trade or that he regularly offers for sale.
