Presented here is the documentation of the biotechnology foresight pilot project carried out as part of the EU fifth framework project eFORESEE. A bottom up approach was selected and therefore the general opinion of the stakeholders involved in biotechnology is herein documented. The core objective of this pilot is to produce a plan to develop the fledgling Maltese biotechnology industry into a core sector of the Maltese economy by 2015 through a collaborative venture between academic institutions, the public sector and private enterprises. Biotechnology is predicted to be an area for the next economic growth. Is inheritable genetic modification the new dividing line in gene therapy? The editors of this searching investigation, representing clinical medicine, public health and biomedical ethics, have established a distinguished team of scientists and scholars to address the issues from the perspectives of biological and social science, law and ethics, including an intriguing Foreword from Peter Singer. Their purpose is to consider how society might deal with the ethical concerns raised by inheritable genetic modification, and to re-examine prevailing views about whether these procedures will ever be ethically and socially justifiable. We live in an era when all bodies are potentially 'feminised' by being rendered 'open-access' for biomedical research and clinical practice. Adopting a theoretically sophisticated and practical approach, Property in the Body: Feminist Perspectives rejects the notion that the sale of bodily tissue enhances the freedom of the individual through an increase in moral agency. Combining feminist theory and bioethics, it also addresses the omissions which are inherent in policy analysis and academic debate. For example, whilst women's tissue is particularly central to new biotechnologies, the requirement for female labour is largely ignored in subsequent evaluation. In its fully revised second edition, this book also considers how policies and developments vary between countries and within specific areas of biomedicine itself. The introduction of biotechnology products has been a source of much controversy in large part because of the moral and ethical issues that development and distribution of these products raises. In view of the burgeoning volume of activity in biotechnology research and development and the far-reaching consequences that biotechnology products may have, there is some urgency to have full and open discussion of these issues. This article identifies a number of the issues that biotechnology has raised and theoretical resources available for aiding deliberation about them. It also sketches a framework for practical reasoning that encompasses many of the issues and examines the relationship between moral and ethical issues concerning biotechnology and other questions that span or extend beyond ethics.

This paper is a review of the 18th National Ethics Conference that took place in November 2022 and was organized by the Department of Ethical Studies of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The aim of this review is to give publicity to the event by informing of the thematic panels, the titles of the reports and the names of the researchers who participated.
