Die Neubegründung der politischen Philosophie ist vor allem das Werk des englischen Philosophen Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679). Er entwickelte in seinem Buch "Leviathan oder Stoff, Form und Gewalt eines kirchlichen und bürgerlichen Staates" von 1651 eine streng individualistische Philosophie, deren Begründungsleistung sich allein auf das Nutzenmaximierungsprogramm der ökonomischen Rationalität stützt. Hobbes vertrieb durch seinen neuartigen, auf analytischer Methode und generativem Erkenntniskonzept basierenden Theorieansatz den politischen Aristotelismus aus Ethik und Politik und verabschiedete damit das christliche Naturrechtsdenken. Indem sie die praktisch-politischen Konsequenzen der modernitätsspezifischen Entzauberung und Desillusionierung einer tradierten Welt- und Menschensicht entfaltet, wird Thomas Hobbes' politische Philosophie zu einem der bedeutendsten Zeugnisse der neuzeittypischen menschlichen Selbstermächtigung. Gegenstand der vorliegenden Einführung bilden der Naturzustand nach Thomas Hobbes, die Beziehungen zwischen natürlicher Gerechtigkeit, Kooperation und Staat, das Verhältnis von Vertrag, Autorisierung und politischer Einheit und die Zusammenhänge zwischen Souveränitätsrechten und Bürgerpflichten sowie zwischen Politik und Religion. This Companion makes a new departure in Hobbes scholarship, addressing a philosopher whose impact was as great on Continental European theories of state and legal systems as it was at home. This volume is a systematic attempt to incorporate work from both the Anglophone and Continental traditions, bringing together newly commissioned work by scholars from ten different countries in a topic-by-topic sequence of essays that follows the structure of Leviathan, re-examining the relationship among Hobbes's physics, metaphysics, politics, psychology, and religion. Collectively they showcase important revisionist scholarship that re-examines both the context for Leviathan and its reception, demonstrating the degree to which Hobbes was indebted to the long tradition of European humanist thought. This Cambridge Companion shows that Hobbes's legacy was never lost and that he belongs to a tradition of reflection on political theory and governance that is still alive, both in Europe and in the diaspora.

Abstrak:Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679), seorang filsuf Inggris beraliran empirisme yang penuh dengan kontroversial karena karya-karyanya, khususnya Leviathan, Hobbes dianggap sebagai ateis yang jahat. Dia dimusuhi semua golongan agama pada zamannya: kaum Kalvinis, Anglikan, maupun Katolik. Thomas Hobbes mengibaratkan negara sebagai Leviathan, sejenis monster (mahkluk raksasa) yang ganas, menakutkan dan bengis, yang terdapat dalam kisah perjanjian lama. Mahkluk ini selalu mengancam keberadaan mahkluk-mahkluk lainnya dan dipatuhi perintahnya. Maka dari itu, ia muncul ketika siapa pun yang mencoba melanggar hukum negara. Dengan istilah 'Leviathan' dilukiskan bahwa negara seperti monster raksasa purbakala yang hidup di lautan. Di dalam perjalanan hidupnya banyak peristiwa sosial-politik yang mempengaruhi pemikiran Hobbes, diantaranya adalah pertentangan antara gereja anglikan resmi, kaum puritan dan golongan katolik, serta konfrontasi antara raja dengan parlemen. Ketika hobbes berusia senja pada tahun 1649, ia menyaksikan konflik antara raja Charles I dengan parlemen yang berakhir dengan kekalahan raja. Akhirnya raja dipenggal atas perintah Cromwell. Inggris pasca kematian raja Charles I menjadi negara yang diperintah oleh sebuah komisi, tidak lagi dipandang sebagai negara yang adikuasa melainkan sebagai negara yang lemah. Luka-luka sejarah tersebut memaksa Hobbes mencari solusi bagaimana konflik bisa dihindari dan tercipta perdamaian hakiki. Akhirnya Hobbes menemukan solusi bahwa menurutnya dalam negara yang besar pemerintah haruslah absolut agar tidak terjadi kekacauan dan ketidakstabilan politis yang pernah dialaminya. Dewasa ini, secara sia-sia orang mengancam teori absolutisme Hobbes itu. Banyak negara yang menggembar- gemborkan demokrasi dan menolak absolutisme, tapi dalam praktik diam-diam atau secara kasar malah mewujudkan teori Hobbes itu di berbagai bidang kehidupan sosial. Neben der Religionsphilosophie und der philosophischen Theologie wird auch die Offenbarungstheologie erstmals umfassend rekonstruiert. Die zentrale These lautet: Nach Hobbes bedürfen weder die Philosophie noch die Politik religiöser Grundlagen - aber da Religionen Institutionen ausbilden und Machtressourcen darstellen, sind sie notwendigerweise Gegenstand der Politik. Auch aus diesem Grund sind religiöse Überzeugungen und Praxisformen ein - lange vernachlässigtes - Hauptthema von Hobbes' Philosophie.Schottes Monographie wurde mit dem »Promotionspreis 2011 der Philipps-Universität Marburg« in der Sektion Philosophie und Kulturwissenschaften ausgezeichnet.This book contains the first complete interpretation of all aspects of Hobbes's philosophy which treat religious convictions and practices. Not only his philosophy of religion and his philosophical theology, but also his biblical theology are treated in extense. The main thesis is that, according to Hobbes, neither philosophy nor politics in any way need a religious fundament; but since religions establish institutions and thus accumulate means of power, they are necessarily an object of politics. It is for this reason that religious convictions and practices are a - for a long time neglected - main topic of Hobbes's philosophy.Schotte's book was awarded as best PhD-thesis of the Philipps-University of Marburg 2011 in the section Philosophy and Cultural Studies.
