Cet article tente de dégager le noyau normatif de la politique de démocratie culturelle qui s'est constituée dans les années 1970 en Belgique francophone. Il en distingue deux composantes : une composante de critique artiste, extraite du modernisme esthétique, qui donne une version de l'émancipation irréductible à l'émancipation sociale et politique; une composante de démocratie associative, qui fait surgir une forme de société civile associative d'un "second type", irréductible à la démocratie associative de première modernité. L'institutionnalisation de "l'éducation permanente" a permis à cette nouvelle société civile, centrée sur les styles de vie et des savoirs fragmentés, de prendre forme dans la société belge francophone. Dans une deuxième partie, l'article montre comment ces deux intuitions normatives permettent d'identifier trois nouveaux défis culturels : la qualité de l'espace public médiatique, la dissociation entre culture des experts et culture de masse, l'emprise culturelle du consumérisme. Articulées aux intuitions normatives héritées des années 1970, des formes originales de politique culturelle se dégagent comme tâches du temps présent.

Tarsila do Amaral (1886-1973) began her anthropophagic phase in 1928, after the creation of Abaporú, a painting that insinuated the consequent writing of the Anthropophagic (or Cannibalist) Manifesto by Oswald de Andrade in the same year. These proposals formulated ´anthropophagy´ as a devouring of the colonizer, assimilating certain aspects, discarding others and promoting a version of the native that eats the other without shame. In this way, the political proile of anthropophagy in Brazil created visual or literary rhetorical strategies to undo colonialist mechanisms of domination.This article attempts to read the trajectory of Tarsila, taking the painting Anthropophagy, from 1929, as epicenter, a work that operated as a decolonizing challenge to the dominant eurocentric aesthetics based on Western iconography. Inthis image the igures blend into their own environment, imbued in a visual gigantism that can seem threatening. The surrounding jungle recreated a version of tropicalism as a space of power or synergy set in a local atmosphere, which distanced itself from preconcieved ways of symbolizing the Brazilian landscape, and reconstructed a vigorous visuality that confronted the stereotyped invention of the American landscape. ; Tarsila do Amaral (1886-1973) inició su fase antropofágica en 1928 tras materializar Abaporú, una pintura que sugirió a Oswald de Andrade la posterior escritura del Manifiesto antropófago en el mismo año. Estas propuestas formularon la antropofagia como devoración del colonizador, asimilando ciertos aspectos, descartando otros y promoviendo una versión del indígena que comía al otro sin culpa. Por lo tanto, el perfil político de la antropofagia cultural en Brasil creó dispositivos que, desde la retórica visual o literaria, llevaron a desmontar los mecanismos de dominación ligados al colonialismo. ; Tarsila do Amaral (1886-1973) a entamé sa phase anthropophagique en 1928 après avoir réalisé Abaporú, une peinture qui a suggéré la même année à Oswald d'Andradel'écriture du Manifeste anthropophage. Par conséquent, le proil politique de l'anthropophagie culturelle a créé au Brésil des dispositifs qui, du point de vue de la rhétorique visuelle ou littéraire, ont démonté les mécanismes de domination liés au colonialisme.Ce travail propose une lecture de la trajectoire de Tarsila dont l'épicentre est l'oeuvre Antropofagia, de 1929, qui a parié sur la décolonisation de l'esthétique euro-centrique provenant de l'iconographie occidentale. Dans cette image, les igures établissaient une fusion avec l'environnement, pleines d'un gigantisme visuel qui à certains moments devient menaçant. La forêt recréait une version du tropicalisme comme espacede force ou synergie, dans une atmosphère locale prenant des distances avec les manières préconçues de symboliser le paysage brésilien. Le résultat était une visualité vigoureuse qui contestait l'invention stéréotypée sur la scène américaine.

This PhD thesis examines the relationship between the Bloomsbury Group's well-known aesthetic research and its less studied ethical concerns. Roger Fry is famous for his defense of Post-Impressionism in England, but the nuances of his theory are often overlooked ; Clive Bell is always associated with Roger Fry, but also seen as second-rank because of his apparently less cohesive theory ; Forster's modernism is often challenged yet recurrently mentioned as a reference by contemporary authors ; most recent works about Woolf tend to study her social and political ideas and link it with her aesthetic theory. The comparison between their works shows their common ethical and artistic references and their search for new forms of community through art, as well as their ongoing dialogic reflexion. This quest leads them towards Athens, Florence and Paris in search of real or imagined history, but this modern Grand Tour narrative must be undone to open the text to encounters of the Other. The contacts between historical periods, systems of thought and linguistic spheres inspire the arts and their comparison : literature, painting and music borrow ideas and images from one another but at the same time, the comparison points toward a gap in the artistic experience. The reference to the ideal art of music shows, by contrast, that perfect communion with a work of art is impossible. Fry, Bell, Forster and Woolf open up this space in their writing as a gesture towards the other, the reader. ; Cette thèse examine la relation entre les recherches esthétiques du Bloomsbury Group, pour lesquelles ses auteurs sont connues, et ses questionnements éthiques, que l'historiographie littéraire a moins explorés. La friction entre époques, systèmes de pensées et mondes langagiers inspire les arts et leur comparaison ; littérature, peinture et musique s'inspirent l'une l'autre mais font également signe vers un écart dans l'expérience artistique. La référence à l'art idéal de la musique renvoie par contraste à l'impossibilité de communier parfaitement avec l'œuvre d'art littéraire ou picturale. Fry, Bell, Forster et Woolf créent cet écart dans leur écriture pour faire geste vers cet autre de la littérature qu'est le lecteur.

John Steinbeck's works cannot be reduced to a strict aesthetic or ideological categorization. They are often studied at the crossroads of colourful styles that intermingle and clash, in order to grasp the substratum of the work behind its varieties. The challenge of this thesis is to study the link between aesthetics, politics and ethics, starting not from the writer's political positions but from the works themselves, in order to analyze the ways in which these notions can be dynamically and progressively highlighted as the work unfolds over four decades. Moving from the lyrical and picaresque novel to the social novel (particularly Tortilla Flat and the Dust Bowl Novels trilogy: In Dubious Battle, Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath), John Steinbeck makes it possible for a political critique to be constructed in his work based on a questioning of the linearity of narrative discourse. Like the form of the discourse, the narrative "content" conveys and develops a political vision that substitutes for the American Dream and its utopian "Melting Pot" a more realistic sociopolitical structure in which one perceives "two opposing classes", by virtue of the system of capitalist domination. Steinbeck reworked the novel genre to develop a providential, humanist and anti-capitalist vision. By testing the notions of plot, protagonist (or "hero") and temporality, he placed this political critique at the very heart of the writing process, inviting readers to take a fresh look at his more "political" works of the 1930s and 1950s, and at the links between modernism, political engagement and ecology. Although some of his works are radically contested, he has made constant use of the myth of origins. International audience ; Hier soll gezeigt werden, wie bestimmte Merkmale der Triestiner Literatur der Jahrhundertwende – wie etwa der Zweifel an der Sprache oder das Interesse an naturwissenschaftlichem Wissen – mit der besonderen politischen Lage der Stadt Triest im Vielvölkerstaat in Zusammenhang stehen. Die sogenannte « italienische Universitätsfrage » hinderte die Triestiner Italiener daran, innerhalb der Habsburger Monarchie eine akademische Ausbildung in italienischer Sprache zu erhalten, und zwang sie, sich entweder für einen geisteswissenschaftlichen Studiengang in Florenz oder für einen naturwissenschaftlichen bzw. technischen in Wien zu entscheiden. Diese Spannung trug zwar zur Identitätskrise der Triestiner bei, schuf aber auch günstige Bedingungen für das Entstehen einer spezifi schen Form der ästhetischen Moderne. ; This paper aims at showing how aesthetical problems in the literature of a multicultural area are intimately connected with historical and political structures. The lack of an Italian university in Habsburg Trieste forced the young Italians of the city to choose between education in Arts in Florence and education in Sciences in Vienna. The tension resulting from this polarisation may explain the lack of "cultural tradition" in Trieste, but also the importance of the choice and the practice of literary language by Triestine writers, a condition of the modernity of this literature. ; Cet article se propose de montrer comment certaines caractéristiques de la littérature triestine au début du siècle - comme le scepticisme vis-à-vis de la langue ou l'intérêt pour la connaissance scientifique - sont liées à la situation politique particulière de la ville de Trieste dans la double monarchie austro-hongroise. La "question universitaire italienne" empêchait les Italiens triestins de recevoir un enseignement universitaire en italien au sein de la monarchie habsbourgeoise, les obligeant à choisir entre des études de lettres à Florence ou de sciences et techniques à Vienne. Si cette tension a contribué à la crise d'identité des Triestins, elle a également créé les conditions favorables à l'émergence d'une forme spécifique de modernisme esthétique.

The current thesis examines John Mc Grath's theatrical activities as a playwright, as a director or as a theoretician, between 1958 and 1991. It estimates the etthical dimension of the intervention of the playwright, and the aesthetical implications of his wish to communicate with popular audiences. It inevitably questions the value of such concepts as : political theatre, parallel or fringe theatre, "Ceilidh-plays", interventionist theatre, carnival theatre. It situates John Mc Grath's works within national and international heritages. A contemporary bias will inevitably try and appreciate the validity and developments of two tools, privileged in the study of the activities of the playwright: sociology and semiotics. The questions of modernism and post-modernism, of short-lived and lasting works, of distanciation and identification, of universality and contextualisation inevitably arise out of a study whose key object is the process of creating and communicating, from writing to staging, with audiences who have usually been enstranged from official theatres. Epic, John Mc Grath's specific art of writing and staging has first been rooted in the regional cultures of liverpool and the industrial areas in the north of england, before reflecting the diversity of the popular traditions in scotland. Innovating in designing the aesthetical shapes of a theatrical contribution to the moves of contemporary societies, john mc grath allows us to consider the survival of his works and of those theatrical trends which ground their activity on the key place granted to history ; La présente thèse examine l'activité théâtrale de John Mc Grath, comme auteur, metteur en scène et théoricien, entre 1958 et 1991. Cet article traite de la relation entre le modernisme de Mário de Andrade et le futurisme d'Aldo Palazzeschi à travers l'étude d'ouvrages présents dans la bibliothèque de l'auteur brésilien et de certains de ses écrits publiés au tournant des années 1920. L'analyse d'une partie de ce vaste corpus montre que Mário de Andrade a lu attentivement des œuvres de Palazzeschi telles que L'Incendiario et Il Codice di Perelà, parues à l'époque où l'auteur florentin était lié aux futuristes, et qu'il s'est reconnu dans des prémisses structurant ces productions. Il s'agit ici des premiers résultats d'une étude en cours, qui retrace les connexions entre futurisme italien et modernisme brésilien et témoigne du dialogue, encore peu exploré, entre deux auteurs fondamentaux pour la construction esthétique au sein des avant-gardes du XXe siècle.

"International law is a fundamentally modern phenomenon. Tracing its roots to nineteenth-century pronouncements on the 'law of nations,' the discipline took shape in the elaborate treaty structures of the post-First World War era and in the institutions and tribunals established after the Second World War. International law as scholars know and study it today is a product of modernism. In The Aesthetics of International Law, Ed Morgan engages in a literary parsing of international legal texts. In order to demonstrate how these types of legal narratives are imbued with modernist aesthetics, Morgan juxtaposes international legal documents and modern (as well as some immediately pre- and post-modern) literary texts. He demonstrates how the same intellectual currents that flow through the works of authors ranging from Edgar Allan Poe to James Joyce to Vladimir Nabokov are also present in legal doctrines ranging from the law of war to international commercial disputes to human rights. By providing a comparative, interdisciplinary account of this modern phenomenon, Morgan's work highlights the ways judges, lawyers, and state representatives artfully exploit the narratives of international law. It demonstrates that just as modernist literature developed complex narrative techniques as a way of dealing with the human condition, modern international law has developed parallel argumentative techniques as a way of dealing with international political conditions."--
