; At the invitation of the International Association of Academies and the Royal Society of London, the Madrid Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences participated in one of the grand bibliographical projects of the beginning of the 20th century: the International Catalogue of Scientific Literature (1904-1921). José Rodríguez Carracido (1856-1928), librarian and member of the academy, was responsible for providing London with bibliographic information on Spanish scientists. The lack of political support made Spain's participation problematic. On the basis of the experience acquired, the Madrid Academy of Sciences, through the efforts of Leonardo Torres Quevedo (1852-1936), attempted to export the British model of organization to the Hispano-american world by creating the International Hispano-American Union of Scientific Bibliography (1910), an institution that also failed because of lack of support from Spanish politicians. The only material product of the Union was the Vocabulario Tecnológico (Technological Glossary), the second edition of which was published in 1990.
A review essay on 8 books discussing the role of the international community & the broader impact of NATO's intervention. It is suggested that many volumes addressing the international dimensions of the conflict collude to support the idea that an international dimension did not exist until 1998. Addressed are (1) NATO's decision to conduct Operation Allied Force, (2) the legality of NATO's actions, (3) the effectiveness of the campaign, & (4) the meaning of the intervention for international society. At issue is the continued oversight of critical issues despite the plethora of scholarship. J. Backman
This book examines the ongoing power transition and its ramifications for world order from an international society perspective. In that perspective, the outcome of big changes in the distribution of power is a matter of socialization rather than structural determination or the resilience of the so-called Liberal world order. Consequently, the key question of this book is how the ongoing power transition affects, and is affected by, the social institutions of world order including sovereignty, the balance of power, international law, diplomacy, trade, humanitarian intervention, national self-determination, and environmental stewardship. The guiding theoretical assumption of the book is that power transition stimulates fundamental institutional change rather than major conflict or a breakdown of international order, while international organizations are key arenas for the realization and negotiation of such changes, not the victims of hegemonic retreat. The argument is pursued in sections on rising and declining powers (Anglo-America, Russia, China and the EU, among others), consequences for the fundamental social institutions and changes in international organizations, globally and regionally. In combination, the chapters reveal the contours of the coming world order. "The objective of this article is to explore how political Sufism, in conjunction with political Shī'ism, influences contemporary Iranian internal and external affairs, the decision-making process, and the future political ideology. While religion has consistently been an integral part of Iranian state and culture, the primary faith has not always played a definitive role in political decisions throughout history, particularly in recent decades. To gain a deeper understanding of Iranian politics and its future trajectory, it is essential to comprehend the role of Sufi elements within it. This work elucidates the core political Sufi ideas and their persistence and development within Persian borders up to the present day, despite facing substantial opposition from the ulama. Furthermore, in order to identify these Sufi elements within the current Iranian political landscape, the article analyzes all presidential administrations since the Revolution and highlights how political Sufism has become ingrained in both the decision-making process and political propaganda. Key-words: Sufism, Iran, politics, Shī'ism, propaganda, eschatology"
